Rick and Morty’s Season 1 finale delivered the unexpected revelation that Rick’s wacky catchphrase, “Wubba lubba dub dub,” actually translates to “I am in great pain. Please help me.” Who knew? The fact that Rick uses his outward persona as the fun-loving, rule-breaking renegade scientist to mask the deeply troubled man within has quickly become a running theme in Season 2. “Auto Erotic Assimilation” is another installment that blends bizarre humor and poignant character moments into a surprisingly cohesive whole.

Right off the bat, it was nice to see Summer included in Rick and Morty’s latest misadventure again. She made for a fun addition to their dynamic in “Ricksy Business” and “A Rickle in Time,” and at this point I have no problem with her becoming the unofficial third member of the group. Here it was good to have someone to make up for the fact that Rick and Morty were separated for most of the episode.
