When I but my batteries in sometimes the mod won't turn on. Take them in and out a couple times mod starts up fine. Have any on you experienced this? It's only happened twice, and has the newest updates

No. Try cleaning all contacts with a drop or two of Isopropyl alcohol (90% or so) on a Q-tip, use the dry tip to dry the contacts. To be on the safe side, wait a few minutes, in order to let eventual alcohol evaporate.
BTW, when changing tanks often, clean the mod's 510 connection the same way. It's one of the maintenance items on my list. I usually clean the 510 connection every two to three weeks.

pierce the little black grommet out in the battery compartment and check the screw under it is tight

Checked the screw. Seemed tight. Gonna try cleaning the contacts later tonight. My main concern is a possibility of a short or something.
