Despite its many tenuous bumps and bruises, Saga’s latest arc has felt almost breezy in comparison to the trials and horrors that have come before. Well, consider that breeze snuffed – Saga #29 is a doozy, its pages filled with surprising swerves and shocking halts. We’re again reminded that there’s no such thing as a safe character in this ever dangerous world, and in the hands of Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughn that’s a very exciting notion indeed.

Given Saga’s emotional complexity, it’s often easy to forget that it’s an adventure epic at its heart. The last few issues have done much to reinforce that fact, Vaughn pointing his three storylines in unique and dangerous directions. Whether it’s Marko and Prince Robot IV braving the hails of space to rescue their loved ones or Sophie and The Brand hunting the elusive cure for The Will, each adventure carries the belief, however misguided, that they’ll succeed. Sure there are bumps in the road, but with so much at stake our heroes will beat the odds, no matter how badly they’re stacked against them.
