The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra might as well be the new Galaxy Note, now that it comes with a stowable S Pen.

Last year’s Galaxy S21 Ultra already introduced S Pen compatibility, but now you can slot the digital stylus into Samsung’s latest flagship phone just like the last Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

That aside, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra looks very familiar to last year’s model. It’s gone with the same sized 6.8-inch display, but the screen resolution has taken a slight bump down from 3,200 x 1,440 to 3,088 x 1,440.

The Super AMOLED display still looks as impressive as ever with colors that pop off the screen and pixels that go completely black. It also sports a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz and a 240Hz touch sampling rate, which should make this a top gaming phone – though I couldn’t play any games on my sample during the hands-on time.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra felt nice and snappy thanks to the unnamed 4nm processor powering it. Switching and starting apps feels quick, and the phone didn’t miss a step when switching to something more taxing like editing videos. Samsung’s new flagship comes with a base of 8GB RAM with 128GB internal storage, and there are three more configurations above that.

  • 8GB RAM with 128GB internal storage
  • 12GB RAM with 256GB internal storage
  • 12GB RAM with 512GB internal storage
  • 12GB RAM with 1TB internal storage

Perhaps the biggest change to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is on the rear side, where there isn't a pronounced camera bump anymore. The camera setup hasn’t been diminished at all. You still get four different cameras including a 108-megapixel wide, a 12-megapixel ultrawide, a 12-megapixel ultrawide, a 10-megapixel 3x optical telephoto, and a 10MP 10x optical telephoto lens.

Here’s the exact specs of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra's cameras

  • (Ultra Wide) 12MP, 1.4μm, 1200, 13mm, F2.2, Laser Auto Focus
  • (Wide) 108MP, 0.8μm, 850, 23mm, F2.2 + Adaptive Pixel (High Resolution Photo and Nona-Binning)
  • (Tele - left) 10MP, 1.12μm, 110, 230mm, F4.9 + 10x Optical Zoom and 100x Space Zoom
  • (Tele – right) 10MP, 1.12 μm, 360, 69mm, F2.4 + 3x Optical Zoom
  • (Selfie) 40MP 1.4μm, F2.2

If you look at the bottom of the phone, there’s the new addition of the stowable S Pen. Anyone that’s used a Galaxy Note phone should feel instantly familiar, as the whole experience is the same. If you pull out the pen with the phone completely asleep, you get a digital blackboard to write on. And taking the pen out regularly pops up a list of shortcuts for taking a note, writing over a screenshot, and more.

Writing with the S Pen feels quick and intuitive as ever and even a bit more responsive too. This is largely thanks to Samsung’s latest algorithms that predict every possible direction you might drag the pen next before you even make a stroke.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is available for preorder with a starting price of $1,199, and it launches on February 25.

And be sure to check out everything Samsung announced during its Galaxy Unpacked Spring Event.
