Amazon Prime Day is finally here, and with it a metric ton of tech deals on everything from TVs to graphics cards. And if you're looking for a new phone, Prime Day might be the best time to do it, as both the Samsung Galaxy S23 and the Google Pixel 7 Pro – two of the best phones on the market right now – are seeing a steep price cut on Amazon.
These are two vastly different handsets, so the right one for you is ultimately going to depend on your own personal needs, but we can at least try to help you figure out which phone ultimately wins out.
The Google Pixel 7 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S23 don't exactly start off on even footing when it comes to price. Even before discounts, the two models on sale have different specs, which makes for different pricing. That makes for a slightly different pricing gap, with the former costing just $799 and the latter being listed at $899.
So if you're looking for the most affordable option here, it's going to be the Galaxy S23, which is on sale during Amazon Prime Day for just $599. That cuts a cool $200 off the price, but the Google Pixel 7 Pro actually gets a larger amount cut off.
The Google Pixel 7 Pro enjoys a Prime Day deal of $649 for the 128GB model, $250 off its $899 sticker price. That means the discount on the Google Pixel phone is higher, but it still ends up being more expensive.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 simply has a better price right now, though, so if you just want a great deal that's probably the way you want to go.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, a System On A Chip (SoC) centered on an 8-core processor. That's backed up with 8GB of RAM, a 6.1-inch display with a 1080p resolution and, for the model on sale for Prime Day, 128GB of storage.
The Google Pixel 7 Pro, on the other hand, is powered by silicon produced in-house by Google. The Google Tensor G2 is also an 8-core part, but it's a bit slower in conventional workloads than the Snapdragon chip, though it does have a faster GPU and more RAM, making it a bit better in gaming.
Realistically, from a pure hardware perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is better all around. So unless you're after the incredible camera of the Pixel, you're better off with the Samsung Galaxy S23.
At this point, Google and its Pixel smartphones have a reputation for having the best cameras in the game. That hasn't changed, but the Samsung Galaxy S23 is no slouch, either.
Both the Samsung Galaxy S23 and the Google Pixel 7 Pro have 50MP main cameras, but the Pixel 7 Pro pairs that main camera with a 12MP ultrawide camera and a 48MP telephoto lens, giving it much better zoom capability. The Galaxy S23 also has a 12MP ultrawide lens, but its telephoto lens is cut to 10MP, cutting the natural zoom to just 3x, though you can use digital zoom up to 30x, thanks to the power of the Snapdragon.
It probably shoul.dn't come as much of a surprise, but if you want the best camera you can get, you should go for the Google Pixel 7 Pro.
Both the Google Pixel 7 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23 have QHD displays, but you are going to get a significantly larger display with the Pixel 7 Pro.
Google's flagship phone has a 6.7-inch display, while the Samsung Galaxy S23 has a 6.1-inch display. That might not sound like much of a difference, but if you want a huge screen on your phone, you know that's a pretty wide margin.
On the other hand, the larger display on the Google Pixel 7 Pro may make it a little harder for folks with smaller hands to effectively use.
It's hard to argue with the lower price of the Galaxy S23. Even with a more powerful chipset, Samsung's flagship is just more affordable on Amazon Prime Day. The Google Pixel 7 Pro definitely has its strong suits – with more RAM, a faster GPU and a bigger screen among them – but the raw value of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Prime Day deal still wins out. If you're on the market for a new Android smartphone, do yourself a favor and grab the Galaxy S23.
