Scratch Code?

I've noticed, a couple times, vendors making a point the products they're selling are "authentic" and have "scratch codes." Can somebody educate me on what that's about?

Thanks,
Jim

It's a number that's hidden under a cover that you scratch off and go to the product's web site and enter the code. If it's a real product of that company you will get a indication that it is not counterfeit or cloned.

Thanks, RMarcusY. That was the only thing I could think of that it would be, but a search engine search wasn't turning up anything useful.
