Secret Wars has reached a critical point as it rounds the halfway mark. The ragged few survivors of the Marvel Universe and Ultimate Universe have emerged from hiding, drawing the attention of God Doom and the Thor Corps (a stellar band name if ever there was one). The first big showdown on Battleworld unfolds in this issue, offering a thrilling new chapter with real consequences for our heroes.




This fourth issue illustrates just how new reader-friendly Jonathan Hickman and company are striving to make Secret Wars (despite the literal years of build-up in Hickman's past works). Hickman delves a little deeper into the origin of Battleworld here, but only enough to illuminate the dynamic Doom and his sheriff, Doctor Strange. This issue avoids delving too deeply into the minutia of previous stories, instead keeping the focus on tight pacing and an exciting showdown between the various factions of heroes and villains. I do wish there was more than one solitary, silent panel that acknowledged the deep rivalry between Black Panther and Namor and the former's shock at seeing the latter still alive, but it's debatable whether that material would have any place in the context of this issue.
