Denis Leary's new FX series Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is the kind of show that fits perfectly in the network's summer slate. While not the most hilarious or groundbreaking of shows, it maintains just enough energy to keep you interested, at least for an episode or two. Sex&Drugs is far and away from appointment TV, but it's not a bad way to pass the time in these quiet months leading up to the fall.
On the show, Leary stars as Johnny Rock, the former lead singer of a '90s rock 'n' roll band that very nearly hit stardom before Johnny's ego -- and his various addictions -- got the better of them. We learn all this through a clever, VH1-style "Where Are They Now?" opener, showing us just how much of an ass Johnny was to his bandmates. 20 years later, the ex-icon's most notable gig is playing Jon "Non" Jovi in a local tribute band. But things start to turn around when Johnny's estranged daughter, a brash and talented young singer named Gigi (played by Elizabeth Gillies), decides to hire Johnny to write new songs for her. The catch? Johnny has to get the whole band back together, because, as Gigi notes, their solo albums sucked.
