For better or for worse, Return of Wolverine reads very much like a direct sequel to 2014's Death of Wolverine. It has the same spartan, stripped-down storytelling approach. It's also marked by its own novel approach to depicting Wolverine's powers and personality. But visually, this sequel fails to meet the lofty standard set by its predecessor.
Issue #3 features the long-awaited reunion between Logan and the X-Men. Though with Logan currently grappling with amnesia and being in the middle of an important mission, the X-Men are more hurdles to overcome than friends with which to reconnect. The "Wolverine goes rogue against the X-Men" trope is nothing new at this point, but writer Charles Soule and artist Declan Shalvey find plenty of room to freshen up the execution. The recurring motif of Wolverine accessing fragments of his old personality pays off nicely here. We get to see Wolverine the tactician, one who knows how to fight smart and exploit his opponents' weaknesses. That's not a version of Wolverine we get to see often enough. And that version contrasts nicely with the more human Logan, one who shines through occasionally when flashes of his old life shine through the current fog of war.
