Simple coil vs special coils

This may pretty much sound dumb but is it just me that I find simple coil (24g kanthal/ss) gives off better flavor than any other special coils (clapton, fused clapton, twisted, triple twisted)?

So far I've tried clapton (24g x 36g, 26g x 32g ka), fused clapton (26g x 36g ka), twisted and triple twisted ( 22g, and 24g ka). But they all end up tasting less, especially twisted type coils, than simple wound up coils for me.

Do I have a f*cked up taste buds or am I doing something veeeeery wrong. Or is it something preferential like what I always read.

I'm running on goon v1.5 rda clone and smoant Charon.

Statistically you are not alone in this belief. Of course, if you compared both types of coils side by side. I am using advanced coils for over two years. Several times I tried using regular wire, but every time I went back to advanced coils. Minimum fused clapton with 38G wrapper. The diameter of the core depends on the atomizer used. I do not use thicker wire for wrapping than 38G. With finer wrappers the taste gets more subtle and less intense. I like most coils with three cores, like alien. I also do not use atomizers with side airflow. The bottom airflow gives a significant improvement in the taste intensity. I use the least power possible. Some flavours don't like hot clouds. There are naturally users who are vaping with their eyes, so the more complicated the coil is, the "tastier", but that's another matter. The basis is to choose the atomizer to suit your needs (you want the taste, you take the bottom airflow), then select the coils for the atomizer, because not in every atomizer the best coils are the biggest and most complicated. A good coil must have a favorable surface to mass ratio. You atomize by the surface (the larger the surface, the better), but if the coil is heavy, it needs a lot of energy to heat up, some of that energy will not be consumed by atomization. If the clouds are warmer and warmer then the liquid is overheated. Another thing is the way taste works. If you use the same e-liquid all the time, you can get used to it so much that you stop tasting it. The more that a large part of taste sensation is taken from the sense of smell. If you have compared the regular coils and the advanced side by side, in the same atomizers, with the same liquid and you think the regular wire tastes better, then the advanced coils are not for you. In my opinion Fused clapton (with thin wrap) gives + 20% to the intensity of taste. And with more complicated it gets interesting. The intensity may not change much, but the different coils differently atomize the liquid, so the different notes of taste are enhanced.

Thanks for shedding some light for me. Didn't realize that airflow location matters that much for flavor. Can I ask what rda you're currently using?

Currently I am using tsunami 22 and tsunami 24. The coils are close to airflow. 2 mm roughly.

I'd go so far to say even the right juice for the right atty..I have some juices that really shine in certain attys and in others with the same build they are a totally different juice.

My case studies support your assertions ... bottom airflow is key to flavor. Case in point, UD Bellus; positioning coils as high as possible to replicate bottom airflow had the most flavor. I agree that complex coils (e.g., Aliens) 'taste' better than simple 'round' coils.

However, since I enjoy e-juices with coil-gunking flavors (Butterscotch, Caramel, Espresso, Chocolate and various heavy creams), I replace my coils daily to avoid gunk and minimize exposure to acrolein and aldehydes. IMHO, the '15% to 20% improvement in flavor' is not worth the cost. Simple 'round' coils work for me ... cheap too ($0.02 each to build).

I think there are no coils that can handle such juices. Composite coils are more efficient. After a few hours of using such juices, they would need cleaning. I used to use "mints in dark chocolate". Product of a colleague who makes excellent juices. It was a very short adventure. I usually clean the coils before gunk appears. Depending on the liquid used, every 20-50 ml. Chocolate after 5 ml forced me to retreat.
In that you are absolutely right.
It seems to me that in this case standard coils are more of a necessity than a choice. This is the beauty of vaping. Each of us can have what we like and keep us away from the smoke.

Any reasons why build a 8-10 wrap coil? If you're into surface area give parallel coils a try but be sure to check your ohms since there's a biiig difference between simple 10 wrap and parallel 5 wrap.

It was really to keep the surface area as high as possible in a simple coil using single strand round wire in each coil because I've found that I get good enough clouds and GREAT flavour without sucking up TOO much juice!

Are you on mech mod? I wouldn't suggest parallel coils unless you have access on am ohm meter. But iirc dual 6 wraps 24g k1 was around .17 ran on my mech tube but that's k1.

It's actually pretty simple to make parallel coils. You just bend around 8-10 inches of wire, bend it at the center and make sure you wrap evenly.

Give parallel coils a go. I ran dual 28g ss316l, 3mm id, 5 wraps on vape tool and it calculated around .312 ohms. Actual coil should be somewhere near that

I can't actually comment on the flavor given by the wire because I had vapers tongue that week. I ran it once on my mech, vtc4 fresh charge, so it should be around 103 watts without computing for battery sag and voltage drop off. I'd say it was around 90 watts actual. Vapor wise though, gives a shit ton of clouds.

For me I stick with simpler wire builds. I run dual twisted 28 gauge nichrome80 with a parallel 26 gauge n80 to aid with ramp up. Bottom airflow is definantly key! I have been unable to part with my mutation x v4 it can be a messy deck leaking wise but I have yet to find another mod that put out such good flavor.

Wow! When I said simple build I was thinking of a single strand of round wire per coil, twisted this and a parallel that sounds more in complex country than simple! I have to say I haven’t tried nichrome at all as I’ve been so pleased with the clean taste, the flexibility and the consistency of SS316L that I’ve stopped experimenting with metals. If what you described is what you consider, I’m kinda interested to know what you have built that you consider complex! LOL

That’s right, everything about taste is subjective I suppose. Do you only use nichrome, if so was there a journey before you got there. I’m asking because I don’t like the metallic taste I get from Kanthal, I found Titanium too limiting being TC use only really, but I love the dual use, (TC/VW), and the lack of metal taste from Stainless Steel.

With a regulated mod, ohms don't matter much - my favorite flavor build is actually a single 1.6 ohm SS coil in the Serpent Mini 22...so two coils like that would be bangin' on flavor, if you can get 5 or 6 volts to it

I've been using kanthal and SS Clapton/fused Clapton coils for about a year, but I'm waiting on some 26g Nichrome in the mail, to go back to smooth parallel coils. I also have sweet juice and I am hoping parallel coils are easier to clean than Clapton's.

Edit: my coils right now are twisted 28g wound with 36g SS, in the ijoy exp, and they're great, but more clouds than strong flavor

I've experimented with parallel and twisted wire, and claptons. All I use today are simple spaced coils. The extra work simply wasn't worth it for me for the minimal difference in the vape.

I use aliens but only if I'm to tired to wrap my own, since they are prebuilt. I do notice I get barely flavor out of the aliens in comparison to a simple ss build, but then again I use the limitless plus and well its top airflow. And while I build them pretty high, still depending on the juice that day, I might chase that flavor all day, without any satisfaction. I'll get a new RDTA or RDA in the next weeks, but till then, I sure feel the same as OP about fancies....

I prefer ss316 wire, or plain kanthal a1, for me nichrome had a strong metallic taste that didn't seem to go away.
I like simple 2-3 strand twisted just enough to stay together, or a finely wrapped fused Clapton if I am building. Can't say I have tried a straight parallel coil tho'. Seems like the Clapton coils give a stronger vape watt for watt. But if each is set for optimum preheat, and flavor production, i don't notice much difference other than it seems Clapton's are a bit harder on the juice. Haven't really done any side by side comparisons tho'.

If i am feeling lazy what ever I grab out of the prebuilt octagon goes in and gets set to whatever works. Some juices are touch and don't handle extra heat /power well others seem to taste better and better right up until it's almost too hot to vape.
Enough rambling from me, seems my limited experience is somewhat similar to others FWIW

It sounds like you are on the right track with your comparisons, but I think running 2 different coils at the same wattage is betraying your results. A SSFC run at the same 35 watts that you run a single 28g is not a fair comparison at all.

Look at it this way, if I was willing to vape at higher power I would also change my simple coil setup to be the best it could be at that power level. I really like a good layered flavor, but not near as well in a lower vapor production tank/ build such as my silver play. Lots of flavor but only enough airflow to support 40 or so watts before starting to heat up.
For me theirs nothing like big cool wet flavorful vape coming from an open air lung hit. Of course it can be hard on juice and batteries, but to each their own

To me, personally, the idea is not to make the vapes as similar as I could get them and compare them, but rather, it is to get the most satisfying vape possible out of each coil build and compare them, and, if it turns out I like the vape of one particular coil build better vs another at the sacrifice of using more power and juice, then my next step is to try and evaluate whether this sacrifice is worth it. But it varies a lot depending on the mood I'm in... and it also depends on which RDA and what juice type. I certainly don't vape a heavy custard the same way I vape a fruity mix. The simplest coil builds I'll use are fused claptons (and 11 wraps 28g/.3×.1 Kanthal tigers on a stacked mech that uses 4 batteries in series).

Well that's true. It's been months since I asked this and I've built several types of coils already and I've been vaping on Alien 28g n80 or n90 for quite some time. But some people I know goes back to far simpler builds like FC's and simple round builds even after me giving them aliens to try out.

All in all I think it all falls down to rda/rdta/rta, juice flavor, and warm or cool vape.

Check out the Drop RDA. Pretty easy to build with, tons of airflow, and I get nice hot, flavorful vape experience off it. I usually run it with 3 core aliens 26g/28g n80 or 28g n90.

I've also tried fraple and fraliens with it. Better flavor than 3 core aliens,imo, but the downside is it just sucks the life out of your batteries so I went back to 3 core aliens.

I've also tried fraple and fraliens with it. Better flavor than 3 core aliens,imo, but the downside is it just sucks the life out of your batteries so I went back to 3 core aliens.



I'm not complaining tbh. I'm just amazed that someone scrolled down in the flavor chasers corner . I usually stop at like the 2nd page
