Wicking the Big Baby Beast / Baby Beast RBA Coil

First, cut two strips of cotton (with the grain) at approx 15mm width.
smok_bb_rba_ (10) (Medium).jpg
Now remove the two compressed "skin" layers from the cotton strips. This will allow the "fluffy" portion of the cotton strips to be exposed and absorb more juice quicker.

You then tight roll one end of each cotton strip so that you can slide it in the coil smoothly. There will be slight pressure on the cotton strip as your trying to slide it into the coil. Gently hold both ends and keep a slight pressure on the strip while pulling it through each coil. This will ensure the strip does not bunch up and/or tear while you are working it into the coil.
smok_bb_rba_ (13) (Medium).jpg smok_bb_rba_ (14) (Medium).jpg smok_bb_rba_ (15) (Medium).jpg smok_bb_rba_ (16) (Medium).jpg

You are now ready to trim your cotton to the length needed. With a good pair of sharp scissors, cut each end just to edge of the tank base. I usually cut mine at the same angle of the base. Once you have all four ends cut, fluff out the outside portion with your tweezers. This removes any compression that may still exist from pulling it through the coils.

Now we need to tuck the cotton down into the juice well. This part can be a bit tricky, however I have found it to be easier to work the under layer of the cotton first into the juice well and then roll the top of the cotton down and tuck it in.
smok_bb_rba_ (23) (Medium).jpg smok_bb_rba_ (24) (Medium).jpg smok_bb_rba_ (25) (Medium).jpg smok_bb_rba_ (26) (Medium).jpg

You are now ready to screw the coil sleeve into place. Put this sleeve on first before juicing your cotton. The cotton will expand once you juice it up and we want the cotton to expand against the inside portion of the sleeve. If you juice the cotton first, and then put the sleeve on it has a tendency to compress the cotton into the juice well even further.
smok_bb_rba_ (27) (Medium).jpg smok_bb_rba_ (28) (Medium).jpg

Now that that is completed, your ready to put the glass on the top cap, and then thread the top cap and glass down on to the base.
Watch closely that you do not cross thread the top cap into the coil head. Also make sure that the o'ring gets a nice seal while threading it down.

I've been vaping this coil setup at a nice warm 60watts and it is wicking beautifully.

do you get a lot of popping? I seem to be getting a lot of popping at 66 watts. I purchased bacon cotton? and its all fluffed out already( hard to cut identical wicks). Im getting really good flavor, its just very loud.

It really depends on what juice I'm using usually. I've noticed that fruits will not pop as bad as bakery / sugary types.

Example being the one that I have in that tank is a Buttermint Sugar Cookie that I make. That one really pops on the coils of all my tanks. I assume it is the sugars in it.

great tutorial Phantom!
Thanks Boogiebot ... I put one up for the Herakles RTA-2 this morning also. I'm going through my tanks that I've purchased recently and doing full reviews and my wicking techniques on them. The next one will be the Geek Vape Ammit later today.

I continue to have the piss out the bottom of the air flow area no matter how I wick it. I think it's from the top seal not fitting correctly and causing a vacuum to push out the juice, but for the life of me can't figure out how to fix it. I think the top deck where the white gasket sits isn't machined deep enough because all of the seals I've tried have the same problems with ever gasket. Any advice?

Can you take some pictures of what you have going on. This will help me get a visual of what it may be.
Please take pictures of the top seal as well as the wicking that you are doing.

I will try to in the next few days. Hopefully it will help. The top is much tighter on this big baby than the little baby. When you close the top is when it happens. You can tell it's air forcing the juice out. Maybe it's because the wicking isn't stopping it, but I feel like there is plenty blocking the channels so it should leak so furiously.

This is very possible. If there isn't enough wicking in the juice flow channels it will just squirt right into the center of the coil and out the air flow channels. Has happened to me many times. That is why I put this thread up.

Is your cotton touching the bottom air hole mate (ones under the coils)? Avoid these or you get leaks, at least I found this

Also silly question do you keep tank upright (other than drawing on it)? This will leak if not kept upright

This is a fiddly deck for wicking need just the right amount (beast tank) think I've absolutely nailed it once no leaks at all and no dry hits ...normally had one or the other though lol

I think KingPin! might be right. I think I might have too much. I know I was aggressive with the length based on PhantomOp's photos and videos I've watched. I cut them what I thought was about the edge of the orange seal on the base and then fluffed and tucked in.

Also, could using too thin a piece of cotton cause issues? It slid in a little easier than I thought it should.

Someone else mentioned it could be a leak at the chimney, but that doesn't seem right. Have only had this problem with the RBA.

Before you fluff rake the ends to remove some cotton you definitely don't want too little cotton on this deck but it shouldnt be really tight in the juice wells or you get dry hits ...like I said it's a fiddly bstd to get right .... i had length just long enough that it was able to sit at the juice hole

So difficult to get zero leaks from this deck as I said once I was able to able to ...gave up in the end to much effort involved just getting pissed off so bought myself a dedicated RTA instead works better in every way

This topic helped me EMENSELY. Cutting the cotton with the grain, I wasn't paying attention and was cutting against it just comes apart when peeling outer layer.
I was ready to punch something then I read this and the BBB tank i's dialed in big time...no more leaks. Thanks for showing some of u's the obvious.

Thank you for the Tutorial, btw do you guys know of a way to buy the spare glass tank for the RBA?
I checked the rba kit that smok sells with rba coil and spare glass but although the coil is the same, the glass is for the baby version and not my Big Baby.

Previously I could not find them, however, I just did some google foo and it appears they are now showing as available for purchase.

What kind of cotton was used in the tutorial. I have some sample bags of V2 Cotton Bacon that comes in 2 pieces in each bag but it isn't anywhere near like yours. It's alot thicker and if I cut a 15mm looks like quadruple the amount needed for a 2.5 coil. I'm going to be using a 28/38 Clapton in 2.5 just to be sure I can get a build that doesn't short out.

Cotton Bacon is easy to use. Just pull off what looks like a good amount. You get the hang of how much to use pretty quickly. At least I did.

The specific cotton that I used in this tutorial and I use 99.99% of the time is Cotton Labo Large Pads from Amazon.
I pay around $5.00 a bag and it lasts me quite some time... and I change cotton very frequently in my rotation of tanks, in a house of three vapors (Sunday's are a chore now ... )

upload_2017-5-23_23-41-14.png

I've also used Koh Gen Do Organic Cotton, however price p/bag and qty of sheets is a bit more expensive at $12 p/bag of only 80 sheets.
I really could not tell a difference in the cotton.
upload_2017-5-23_23-44-30.png

Personally (and this is just my opinion) ... I don't like paying high prices for "vaping specific" cottons (Cotton Bacon, etc) because I feel they are a complete rip off to the consumer. I can make these cotton pads work identical to the cotton bacon strips, its called a Scottish roll.

There are quite a few youtube videos out on how to do it. Here is one.

Cool. That's the same exact cotton my husband bought me recently. Gonna last me forever. I do still have almost a full bag of Cotton Bacon, as well. I just go back and forth between the two. I tend to use the Cotton Bacon more for my simple single-wire coil, and the Lab pads for the more complex coils. Just personal preference.

Thanks for this, I'd heard about this method but never tried it till this morning. Did it on the TFV 8 and I have to admit I'm shocked I'm not getting the dry hits from hell (HA!), but is working out rather well on the first try. :)

Perhaps a stupid question - but I used the cotton pad, like he did in the video. Can you do this the same way with cotton bacon or an unrolled organic cotton ball?

Ok so I have the baby beast tank on the smok alien. I bought the RBA and followed the tutorials to the Tee. However every time both me or my husband who is more experienced in building Rba's I Or we get a super high ohm reading. Like the highest I've seen is over 1.00 ohms and the lowest was like .5-.6 ohms. We have tried several times I have even tried vaping on low watts with the .5 but after a few hits it says that there is a short in the coil or don't abuse product. What would you suggest? We are using 26g Clapton with five wraps and bacon cotton. It's extremely frustrating as before we had pharaoh tanks love them but they leak like crazy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That happened to me with a Kanger tank once when the positive post was a little loose on the RBA. Not saying that's your problem, but it wouldn't hurt to check it and maybe tighten it down if you can.

@PhantomOp THANK YOU VERY, VERY, VERY MUCH for the tutorial. I've got a Smok V8 Stick w/BBB on it, using RBA and I've had issues w/leaking out the air holes when using the RBA. I didn't even think about it not wicking properly- personally, I was thinking I was using too much cotton. Since watching your tutorial, measuring the cotton, I'm A-OK!! No leakies!! When I went into a local shop recently to get juice because I was down at my Dad's and out of juice (I usually buy online,) but I didn't grab any when I came to town. ANYWHO, when I walked in for the juice, the girl working there GAVE me the RBA for the V8 (she hated the RBA and just gave it me,) and I've been loving it! My son lent me his RBA glass until I could get one from kidneypuncher.com. I know that practically no tank ever not leaks without a reason, and I'm glad you helped me figure it out. (I know- that'll be $45 for tech support- lol!) Checks' in the mail! I love this site- I can always come here to get help, brag, rant, what-not. Thanks again for posting the tutorial- it was a really big help!! Heck, I still have 2 stock coils I haven't used, and 1 that has been rinsed and dried. I keep them for when I'm out and about and can't just rebuild/rewick on the spot. YOU ALL- ARE SUUUUUUUPER!!! :stars::stars2::hearts:

Just means its still priming the cotton, the cotton hasn't fully been saturated yet. Probably just hit a dry spot or two in the cotton.

@PhantomOp Next question...why is my coil bubbling like a soda? It's not the RBA coil...it's a stock coil- the M2.

yup, just like the others said. When the cotton "breaths" it has to release the air and that is how you know the cotton is taking in juice. If your not leaking out the AFC (air flow control rings) then all is good. However, if you do start leaking, You need to double check your seals, as you could have a bad seal and the cotton is just sucking in the juice and dumping it down the air flow hole onto your MOD.

I'm a dumbass. You're supposed to remove those cottony skins? No wonder I was hating on that cotton. I went out and got some Cotton Bacon 2.0, because I was under the impression that the other stuff sucked. Going to give it a try the RIGHT way next time. Thank you so much for pointing out the obvious. /facepalm

Hi. New here and to building.
I got the baby rba for my baby beast tank... followed the posts.. read through the whole thing... still can get any flavour out this thing.

Im using the preinstalled coils... so so far all im doing is the wicking.
3rd time trying.. 3rd time still now flavour. Vaping at 50w.

I have a baby prince with rba. Using the same cottong on preinstalled coils.. same juice.. yet that one i can get flavour.

Any advice?

Preinstalled coils are reading .35 ohms.

The taste is pretty much a burnt taste. I primed the coils, filled the juice and let it sit.

The wicks are just enough to hang in the juice wells. Its not too thick. Peeled the 2 pressed layers...

Thanks in advance

I have a big baby beast and grabbed an rba deck for it last week, but forgot you need different glass to use the BB rba with the BBB tank. One is on the way from Kidney Puncher.

I have RBA decks for the Prince and Cloud Beast that I've had decent success with. When my glass gets here, maybe we can help each other out.

I run the Baby Beast with the Baby RDA on a X-Priv Baby, it works nice.

Those Smok RBA decks are not to be despised imho. They're not as good as a good RTA of course, but well worth using with their matching tanks.

Yes, Smok has lotsa babies.

Does any1 know if the tfv8 rba fits in the tank that comes on the smok v9 max. I have 1 sitting not in use and figured it could make a decent back up with it having an 8.5 ml capacity...??
