Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts is getting a Star Wars series.

According to Vanity Fair, the 40-year-old filmmaker is set to make a currently untitled Star Wars series which will presumably air on Disney+.

“The show takes place during the post–Return of the Jedi reconstruction that follows the fall of the Empire, the same as The Mandalorian,” the publication states. Plot details remain under wraps.

The show is set to be created by Jon Watts alongside writer Chris Ford, who previously worked alongside Watts on Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Although little is currently known about the show, it does apparently have a working title: Grammar Rodeo.

But don’t get carried away – it’s a reference to an episode of The Simpsons which sees Bart and his friends steal a car as they run away for a week, using a fake educational event as an alibi.

Whether or not this gives us any hints about the plot remains to be seen… but there is already an interesting casting announcement for the upcoming Star Wars show.

“A casting notice has called for four children, around 11 to 12 years old,” confirms Vanity Fair. “Inside Lucasfilm, the show is being described as a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.”

I can’t help thinking that The Goonies in space would be a terrific idea, and with Watts’ work on the recent Spider-Man films, he’s perfectly placed to take on a Star Wars coming-of-age story.

It’s almost as though the Spider-Man trilogy was an audition for this upcoming Star Wars series. After all, it even contained a three-movie Easter egg that fans of the Star Wars saga will have picked up on.

Elsewhere, Ewan McGregor has hinted that the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series will connect to the recent Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game.
