Star Wars: Kanan - The Last Padawan #4 Review

Kanan started out as another worthy addition to Marvel's growing lineup of Star Wars comics, but the most recent two issues have done little to push the book forward or showcase young Caleb Dume's life as a fugitive in interesting new ways. As the conclusion of the book's first arc nears, there's a distinct lack of momentum with Caleb's adventures.

Granted, issue #4 isn't as disappointing or repetitive as its predecessor, but it still encounters similar hurdles. Once again, last month's dramatic cliffhanger is resolved in fairly anticlimactic fashion, leaving little reason to assume the cycle won't repeat again in issue #5. As for the rest of the story, there are a couple strong moments as Caleb bonds with his unlikely new smuggling partner and comes to realize the futility of the Clone wars conflict. But on the whole the script spends too much time rehashes familiar beats without adding a great deal of insight into the former Jedi. Caleb's bond with Kasmir isn't fleshed out to the extent needed, which diminishes the emotional impact of the former's sacrifice.
