subtank coil question

Been using my subtank for just about a month absolutley love this thing but something odd happened today. I put a coil in primed it and let soak about an hour before using in the tank and git a horrid taste. This coil wasn't new but had been soaked in water overnight and dried about 3 days before being used. I have previously done this process on all my aerotank and protank cois with no issues. Wondering if anyone has any insight because the taste is not going away. Is it possible it's from the water contamanenets as the water came straight from the tap. I've got another coil soaking in rubbing alcohol to see if this can fix the issue in that coil because that one has been drying out from the water process used om the awful tasting one. Worst case I have some koga cotton I can re wick with but would prefer to avoid this at all costs, with the koga cotton question is should I boil before use and if so should I avoid the tap water all together and buy distilled water? Sorry if Im rambling just very frustrated at the moment but I appreciate any help that anyone may have thanks so much

Hi Chuck,

I wouldn't suggest boiling Koga cotton since it's already very high quality and organic. There is no hydrogen peroxide, pesticides or any other synthetic chemicals to be concerned with, it's good to go out of the package. With regard to cleaning coils. The Subtank coils are much different than the previous Kanger atomizers in both consruction and wicking material, so the same cleaning method may not apply which is why you're seeing different results. I have had decent results with using baking soda to clean the tank and heads. You can dilute a teaspoon of baking soda to about two cups of hot water and let them soak for approximately 2-3 hours, no need for an overnight soak. Then rinse under sink and let the heads air dry. The other option is to go to your local drug store like CVS, Rite Aid or Wallgreens and get yourself a box of Efferdent tablets, let them dissolve and add the coils. After a few hours you can take them out and rinse under warm water, then air dry as above. You can also go the Vodka, Ever Clear or Isopropyl route if you wish. In the end results will vary so I wouldn't set your expectations high. In my experience it is very rare that you can bring a coil back to life much above 50% of when it was new, provided you had a fresh quality coil to begin with in the first place. Atomizer heads were not designed to be cleaned and reused these are disposable cartridges, unless you rewick. When my heads live out their duration which is usually 2 weeks on a good coil I replace them with a new one. Subtank heads can be had now for as low as $13 for 5. $5.20 is all it would cost to vape an entire month. For me, that's very affordable and save a lot of time and headache with cleanings and rebuilding. Just take out the old insert the new and you continue with your day. Others prefer to rebuild and in the long term it will save you money and possibly become your next hobby. Everyone is different you just have to figure out what works for you since the right answer is always a personal one. Hope this was helpful to you. Good luck with everything:)

So I took the time to try and re wick one of the coils with the koga cotton and still getting a terrible burned taste. The process I used was removed all the old cotton then I dry burned just the coil rinsed with water blew into the coil to get out the excess water. Once it was dry I took the cotton cut the square in half and in half again rolled one end tight and pulled it through and then cut to size matched with the end of the housing. I then fluffed the edge of the cotton and pushed the excess into the coil area. Next I primed the coil until it would not hold any more juice, installed and flipped the tank right side up and let sit about 15 minutes before use. It started out tasting bad to which I attributed to the taste of the fresh cotton. I have heard this can be the case with cotton wicks, after 5 pulls or so started getting a nasty burned taste again. The only thing I can think of is the wick was not long enough this burning through the juice in a single pull. I am so frustrated by this whole situation because this is now an issue with the 4 sub ohm coils I have. This is because the process I have used for over a year vape a coil for a day swap it out for a different one the next day, I had 4 or 5 in rotation at any point so sonce I didn't know soaking the coils would ruin them I have now manged to ruin all the sub ohm coils I have. Now I am using the 1.2 ohm coil that came with the tank which is meh no really that great. The real issue is none of my local vape shops carry the subtank coils or tank because they have the Atlantis, so I have to order online. Them I go to order some and the usual sites I order from are out just to make things worse. Now I have to find a site that has them in stock (if anyone has a place to recommended that would be appreciated) and the weekend is coming so just more days without vapeable coils.I live in ny so the closer the place to order the better. Also any knowledge of what I've done wrong with the new cotton wick I've installed. Also I know the previous response said not to boil the koga cotton but it tasted horrible would a quick boil help? Also the cotton that came with the tank for rba deck is it good quality and should I boil it? Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Thanks again chuck

Is it possible that you melted the rubber insulator at the base of the coil? I have had several of positive leads melt into the rubber and the smell/taste is awful.
