Hello guys i have heard some talking about kanthal tc devices that came out. I currently own a dna 200 and was wondering if it can do tc with kanthal, cant really find much info about it

I think the answer is no but perhaps @f1r3b1rd, our resident DNA expert can come in to confirm. I draw that conclusion because the new Hohm Wrecker is touted as the first to do TC on Kanthal.

no the DNA can't do tc with kanthal. Unfortunately it looks like the jury is still out on the ohmwrecker being able to do it also. I was considering trying one for the sake of seeing what it's all about but after looking further and reading about its propensity being a pain in the ass, I'm passing on it.

I was really interested in the HW as well but from what I can tell its hit or miss. Plus the names of those menu settings, extreme, XXX, vape porn? It's like they hired the marketing team from Mountain Dew.

The. Names bug me, but it's not a deal breaker, if the mod worked as it should. If they cleaned up there qc and got it working well, I would give it a go...only to try it, then sell it. Haha

Indeed.

I think I read in a thread somewhere that @raymo2u had a really good experience with the TC temp control. Also, twisted 420 (total douche and not the best source) did a burn test and if I recall correctly it went well. If they could get it to work right and the tech spread to other mods, I'd never have a reason to vape regular power mode again. However, I have a feeling that is the direction the industry is headed in.

As far as I'm concerned no mod can do proper TC on Kanthal. Most mods struggle to do proper TC on 316L SS because of it's low TCR. Compared to Kanthal, 316L is a walk in the park since it's TCR is 46 times greater than Kanthal! I don't know if you saw Phil's review but it couldn't even do proper TC on SS let alone Kanthal. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is

Here's another review on the G2 from a group of pretty well know reviewers (including Mike Vapes and VapnFagan). They were even less impressed than Phil. They start talking about it at the 10 minute mark and picked up again around the 32 minute mark.

Just wanted to add:

If you are looking for a great TC wire to try, I've really been happy with the 430 SS I bought from Unkamen Supplies. I think the TCR is just high enough that it's working like a charm in my DNA200's. Since receiving it, I haven't used anything else. Just rebuilt a few atomizers earlier today. I'm vaping on it as I type and it's great (my DIY Vanilla Custard is really great on it - made another 240ml of that earlier today too. Been a busy day :D). You can also use the 430 SS in normal power mode if the mood strikes.

Cheers,
Steve

Twisted did give it a glowing review, and the board itself may be doing something. but the qc still leaves alot to br desired in the trust department.
But, overall, @wimsfan0310 has a point. SS has been fantastic! It also runs as well as Kanthal, if not better, in power mode as kanthal or nicr.

i think we all need to consider and remember that. What we are calling temp control is really power limiting. No device that i know of is measuring the temp. it is simply comparing the live under power resistance and adjusting the power to it to maintain it.

SS316 is barely a TC wire for its low TCR makes it less robust when it comes to the slightest connection imperfections, i was only recently been able to do TC properly with it, got my build's resistance reading to be absolutely stable down to the 0.01 ohms to the point that i no longer need to lock the base resistance and it wasn't very easy to achieve that, only then it worked, i do not believe Kanthal can be used properly in TC unless there is an actual temp sensor involved

What TCR value has worked best with that alloy? I will buy that wire soon.

There is only one English mod that has an actual temp sensor placed inside a ceramic heating element for use in TC, it is an unknown kit which i came across once, can't remember the name currently.

But temperature control sounds so much better than resistance control :p:D:).
In the end if your wire is what it's supposed to be, you are using the correct TCR for said wire, and your mod doesn't suck. It amounts to the same thing.

Honestly bro, it was never meant to. It was always meant to just put a ceiling on how hot your wire gets. Then people heard the term 'temp control' and tried forcing it to act like a thermostat.
Technically that's what we are still doing. And on any mod other than ones using a boost feature that's what you're still doing only you're using the boost to touch the ceiling and forcing the chip into thermostat behavior.

Just being real, because, i can't stand setting unrealistic expectations on people shopping for gear, or trying to make something work.

Putting a ceiling on how hot your wire gets is controlling how hot your wire gets.(ie controlling the temperature of your wire). Just seems like semantics unless I'm missing something.

It is semantics... But before the dna200 I was always careful how I worded things...
One leads someone to believe that it maintains the wires temperature at or about the set temp, like a thermostat. In other words when I fire it will immediately get to my set temp and hold it there.
The other
Leads one to realize it won't go above the set temp, meaning that if it takes a while to heat up or never gets there them theoretically nothing changes.

Semantics but again, words gave meanings and it's a logic of perception.

Heck with the DNA200 you can go into the device manager and see how long it takes to ramp up to your set temperature, if it stays there or jumps over and under and by how much. I'm under no illusion of what is happening. It's like coming into a hot house. Just because I turn the AC down to 72, it doesn't mean like magic it immediately gets there. That was especially apparent in the Valley of the Sun (Mesa, AZ) lmao

I've thought about trying it. In theory if your mod can dial in a TCR low enough it should work. But the only reason I can think of doing it is to use up the Kanthal I have laying around. I'm quite happy with SS316L on both my SXmini and eVic mini and Ti 1 on my other mods.

Watch busardo's review of the HW. esp the cotton burn tests at the end :)

It's not a drama series... even if the episodes are the same length. :p

Well Busardo's first HW died. And the second one was flaky as heck, just to sum it up.

Thanks.
Your smilie had me expecting the exact opposite. :p

TCRs of, what... 0004, and around eleven for NICh?
I don't know what iJoy is doing with "Taste Control"or what Kanger are attempting, but I don't have high hopes for actual Kanthal TC.

I'll stick with SS for now, and wait to see what comes of NiFe.

Because I had no interest in the original hOhm Wrecker, the v2 with Kanthal TC kinda snuck in under my radar. So I went and read a couple of threads on it here and elsewhere.

Some people whose opinions I respect are saying it is actual TC.
I was all over the Asolo thread as it was happening, and this ain't that.
Could it be as simple as having an extra couple of digits of res resolution?
That seems to be the only difference.

Others are not so lucky and there seem to be a few QC issues. And the silly practice of hOhmTech hiding the needed update files is only temporary, I hope.
Folks are going to struggle with that for a while to come.

With luck they, and Kanger with their NiCh TC, can get squared away and we'll all move forward with actual "Any wire TC".

Fingers crossed. :D

With SS430 and Nife30 that have TCR's that are reasonable high (see the chart in one of my posts above ^^^). I don't see why we need to beat are heads against the wall trying to get wires with practically nonexistent TCR's to work in TC. I'm not sure I see any advantage to using Kanthal anymore.

I can't disagree.

I don't build for fun, so I'm content with my SS for now. Even the lesser 316L variant.
It's the dual mode use I appreciate. I'll get around to NiFe soon, I expect
But if the industry is moving forward with K and NiCh TC, it should provide improvements across the board.

And I don't have stockpiles of wire either, so I'm not tempted by the early attempts just so I can use them, or use them up.

Totally agree, SS is a safer alloy to vape on than kanthal and it has a good TCR value to make it work well in TC under strict conditions, why are people trying all this funky tech to force kanthal to work in TC? i just don't see the value, the industry is moving in the direction of ceramic heating elements, and SS, kanthal is the past and there is no need to revisit it now with complicated chipset in order to force it into the future.
