Tesla Energy unveiled a home battery system called the Powerwall during an event today hosted by Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk.
Powerwall comes in a US$3,500 10 kWh weekly cycle model and a US$3,000 7 kWh daily cycle model. Home owners can choose from a range of colours and can stack up to nine modules together.
According to Tesla, the Powerwall automatically switches to battery power in the event of electricity outages, and allows users to switch over to battery use during the more costly peak evening hours.
“Powerwall is a home battery that charges using electricity generated from solar panels, or when utility rates are low, and powers your home in the evening. It also fortifies your home against power outages by providing a backup electricity supply. Automated, compact and simple to install, Powerwall offers independence from the utility grid and the security of an emergency backup.”
