The first trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water is getting a lot of views, and seemingly outpacing trailers for the recent Star Wars movies.
The Avatar 2 teaser racked up 148.6 million online views within its first 24 hours – which Disney points out (via THR) is more than the trailers for recent Star Wars movies.
The trailer debuted exclusively in theaters over the weekend, followed by an online release early on Monday, which seems to have generated a huge surge in interest for the upcoming film. The trailer was viewed over 23 million times in China alone.
By contrast, that’s more than all the recent Star Wars films. The Rise of Skywalker’s first teaser managed 112.4 million views in its first 24 hours, with other Disney properties such as Black Widow hitting 116.8 million views, and The Incredibles 2 generating 113.1 million views.
Directed by James Cameron, Avatar 2 is the first of numerous planned Avatar sequels. Our first glimpse at Avatar: The Way of Water takes us back to Pandora – the exotic planet from the first movie. Opening with a shot of the planet’s familiar floating mountains, we’re soon reintroduced to the Na’vi who have taken to traveling around atop winged banshees and aquatic creatures. Then, we catch up with the Sully family as they prepare for battle.
It’s been over a decade since the first Avatar debuted in theaters, and the sequel picks up over a decade later. Jake and Neytiri now have three Na’vi children together – Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss), and Lo'ak (Britain Dalton) as well as an adopted human son called Miles “Spider” Sorocco (Jake Champion) who they must protect from a new threat.
Avatar: The Way of Water stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet.
James Cameron directed the film based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Josh Friedman.
Avatar 2 is set to debut on December 16, 2022, with Avatar 3 to follow on December 20, 2024, Avatar 4 in December 2026, and Avatar 5 in December 2028.
