The Big Bang Theory: Season 8 Finale Review

There are many adjectives one could use to describe The Big Bang Theory, but "depressing" isn't generally one of them. This is a pretty lighthearted show, and only rarely does interpersonal drama carry over from one episode to the next. So it's always a bit of an adjustment when the show veers heavily into dramatic territory like it did tonight. On the other hand, there's been a distinct lack of drama or momentum when it comes to most of the core relationships this season. Better the writers go all-out in the finale rather than simply coast to the finish line.

The drama started this week as Sheldon and Amy engaged in a little bit of "necking like hooligans." Sheldon made the frankly astounding revelation that he hasn't decided whether to watch The Flash yet. And after all the years of being marginalized and ignored by Sheldon, it seems this was the straw that finally broke the camel's back. Amy finally became fed up with Sheldon's self-absorbed ways and left. While there was some solid comedy in this opening segment (particularly Sheldon's inability to handle both irony and sarcasm), but it also set a very grim tone for the rest of the episode.
