Last week's Big Bang Theory wasn't exactly a high point for Season 8. Luckily, "The Graduation Transmission" was far more successful. It was no more dramatically ambitious, but it found success in exploring some minor running plot threads and allowing Leonard to shine on his own rather than merely play the straight man to Sheldon.
It's just about that time of year when teenagers are graduating high school and adults are forced to sit in sweaty auditoriums for hours on end enduring one speech after another. And so the time has come for Leonard to deliver the commencement address at his old alma mater. It seemed like Leonard and Penny were due for a road trip to New Jersey, which would have been a nice change of scenery. And if it allowed for a cameo appearance for Leonard's mother, Beverly, so much the better.
