With Mother's Day around the corner, The Big Bang Theory took the opportunity to celebrate by bringing not one, but two mothers into the fold. The cleverly titled "Maternal Combustion" brought Mary Cooper (Laurie Metcalf) and Beverly Hofstadter (Christine Baranski) back into the fold so the two mothers could bask in the glory of their sons' collective achievement and and butt heads over their diametrically opposed parenting styles and philosophies. It was a memorable encounter, though not without some troubling elements.

Leonard and Sheldon could almost have been switched at birth for all the similarity they have to their respective mothers. One could even argue that the two would have been better off trading mothers. Sheldon would have had a mother better equipped to handle his eccentric personality and keep his rampant ego in check, while Leonard would have had someone to nurture his fragile self esteem and help him grow into a more well-adjusted adult. This episode played well with those two mother/son relationships and the feud between Beverly and Mary that's been a long time in coming. I believe there's been talk as far back as Season 6 of pitting the two mothers against one another. Only now did the two actress' schedules align.
