A new trailer for Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers has been unveiled, and it looks absolutely bizarre. Announced last year during Disney+ Day, the upcoming Chip ‘n’ Dale reboot sees the return of our two favorite chipmunks (sorry, Alvin). Scratch that – it’s a comeback, not a reboot. If you loved the original… well… I’m not sure how you’ll feel about this.

Rather than a straightforward Chip ‘n’ Dale animated movie, it’s all gone a bit meta. It’s more Roger Rabbit than Rescue Rangers, including a cameo from the animated legend.

And the Rescue Rangers don’t look quite the same

According to the trailer, the upcoming movie picks up 30 years after the hit animated series, and much like the toons of Toontown in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the Rescue Rangers are completely aware that they’re cartoons.

Now living in modern-day Los Angeles, the washed-up TV stars are living very different lives.

"It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled," says the official synopsis. "Chip has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale, meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days."

That’s right – Dale has had some work done.

Thankfully, it looks as though Chip ‘n’ Dale will be thrust back into their Rescue Rangers personas, "When a former castmate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life."

At this point, it just gets even weirder.

The trailer sports another meta-joke years in the making, when Chip grabs a costume off the rack as a quick disguise, only to put on an Indiana Jones outfit… which is exactly the same as what he was already wearing. Cute.

Throw in a CGI Seth Rogen, a cyberpunk-looking villain, and a cameo from none other than Scrooge McDuck, and it’s a recipe for… well, who the hell knows. But it’s certainly original.

Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers stars John Mulaney as Chip, and Andy Samberg as Dale alongside KiKi Layne, Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, Dennis Haysbert, Keegan-Michael Key, Tress MacNeille, Tim Robinson, Seth Rogen, J.K. Simmons, and Chris Parnell.

The film is directed by Akiva Schaffer, based on a script by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.

Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman are on board as producers, with Alexander Young and Tom Peitzman as executive producers.
