Originally adapted in 1989 and illustrated by David Wenzel, The Hobbit: A Graphic Novel condenses Tolkien’s classic story into a 144-page paperback, with the narrative carefully abridged to suit a visual format. There’s also a more premium option on sale. The revised and expanded hardback edition, released in 2025, is down to $26.63 from $35. While graphic novel adaptations can sometimes feel like stripped-down versions of the original, this one has held its reputation for decades. The combination of Wenzel’s detailed artwork and a streamlined narrative means it works less as a replacement and more as a complementary way to experience the story.
