The Secret Wars tie-ins so far have offered up new and interesting takes on established characters. Steve Rogers, Shang-Chi, and the Punisher have all been the beneficiaries of fun, What If-inspired, remodels. What Infinity Gauntlet does with its protagonists is significantly more unique and important for the Marvel Universe – it introduces us to an all-new, all-different cast of characters.
Gerry Duggan and Dustin Weaver do a great job of establishing this family and their dynamics. Without the baggage of pre-existing heroes and concepts to slow them down, the storytellers make us feel immediately for Anwen’s hardships. Anwen is a teenage girl whose mother left the family behind to try to and prevent the bug invasion from ever happening. It was a selfless move to make, but one that apparently failed, and that makes those left behind powerless against the bugs.
