Full spoilers follow.
So that’s it: Tandy/Phil isn’t the last man on Earth, but he’s also not the worst guy on Earth. And it took New Phil’s coldhearted treatment of him to prove it.
As Carol said to Tandy/Phil at the close of tonight’s season finale, she doesn’t want to be with someone who would leave somebody out in the desert. That’s New Phil. Tandy/Phil merely tried to do the same (to Todd a few episodes back), but of course he couldn’t go through with it. So despite his constant lying and idiotic behavior and incompetence and general skeeviness, Tandy/Phil is the better guy.
And so, The Last Man on Earth’s first season ends with Tandy/Phil -- who I suppose we can go back to just calling Phil now -- leaving with Carol for a fresh start, perhaps even making a go at their original Adam and Eve repopulation ambitions. It’s a fresh start for them, after all the arrivals by others and twists and turns throughout this season, and it feels right that it should be these two who continue on together.
