The Light in the Darkness is an upcoming narrative-driven adventure game for Xbox and PC that aims to educate players about the Holocaust. It follows a fictional family but is set during a very real event: 1942's Vel d’Hiv roundup in Paris, in which Jewish families were targeted for detention by French police under German authoritarian pressure.

Game director Luc Bernard hopes the game will help educate players, almost literally all of whom weren't alive when this actually happened. One way The Light in the Darkness aims to do this is by including survivor testimonies between scenes – showing the player real victims and hearing how their stories are similar to the game's.

Watch the gameplay commentary above to hear about the game in Bernard's own words. He partnered on the game with Holocaust researcher – and survivor – Joan Salter. Bernard wanted to share a look at the game today as part of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The Light in the Darkness will be available later this year on Xbox and PC.
