It certainly isn't required of a documentary to bring on experts to discuss a problem. Sometimes though having an outside expert can be exceptionally beneficial.
Director Rodney Ascher's new documentary, The Nightmare, offers the stories of eight different people all of whom are affected by a medical condition known as sleep paralysis. Not one expert is ever brought in to talk about the problem, and after watching the movie, the audience will understand exactly how these eight sufferers feel, but maybe not have gained much insight into the condition itself.
A seemingly well documented and not uncommon issue (a press release for the film states 6.2% of the population suffer from it), sleep paralysis involves individuals not being able to move for brief periods as they enter or exit sleep. People, as the documentary does discuss, who suffer from sleep paralysis often have hallucinations and feel difficulty breathing. It is a condition which has to be terrifying. It definitely sounds terrifying, and the eight different people with the problem who discuss it in The Nightmare have clearly had a lot of trouble dealing with it.
