The Path - starring Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan, and Hugh Dancy - gave us a look inside a made-for-show cult/"movement" called Meyerism and a family that lived deeply within its core beliefs. Beliefs that reflected a mishmash of various real cults and compound-based separation societies throughout history, but nothing concrete enough to target a specific sect. The rules of Meyerism were vague enough for it to stand on its own, but there was also a familiarity to the inner workings and ascension process so that everything could feel grounded enough for TV.
So with that as the backdrop, this series - from Jessica Goldberg and Friday Night Lights' Jason Katims - delved into the ugly drama of a close-knit family being torn apart at the seams by doubt. By questions. More than just being a "cult show," it was about the unhappiness that can infect a spouse after more than a decade of unity. A malaise and uncertainty that could easily be the focus of any family drama, much less one taking place inside a cult.
