Note: Full spoilers for The Returned season finale follow.
If you checked into the season finale of A&E's The Returned on Monday night not realizing "Peter" was actually a season finale, odds are you'd be shocked next week when you discovered there's no new episode. That's because, despite taking an entire season to build up the small town mystery and giving viewers ample time to get to know these resurrected characters, there was no clear cut finale storyline in the finale.
Instead, most of the final episode focused on last week's big reveal, that Peter is actually one of the undead, and has been living in the community undetected for years. That twist explained why Victor decided not to kill him that day at the cemetery (as we learned with Simon killing an undead is an impossible feat), and also why he was so eager to accept all of the other people who were resurrected throughout the course of the season. But it didn't serve any purpose when it came to the big finish itself or answering the lingering questions that have been brought up these nine episodes; if anything it did the opposite and raised more -- like why did he age if he was undead? Will he die of old age eventually? Or is there more to his actual nature than we learned in one short episode?
