At this rate, DC may just succeed in wrapping up this oft-delayed mini-series and getting the hardcover out in time for Christmas. Of course, if any comic gets a free pass when it comes to lateness, it's Sandman: Overture. Books this gorgeous and exquisitely crafted simply can't be rushed.

Writer Neil Gaiman continues acquainting readers with the full Endless family. We already met Morpheus' father in an earlier issue, and now it's time for his mother. It's fascinating to read their familial interactions as the two reconnect against the backdrop of a catastrophic, multiversal war. The characters manage to come across as both otherworldly and all too human at the same time. Gaiman's allusions to the disaster unfolding across time and space lend a sense of grandeur and imminent doom to the story. Normally, comics suffer when they feature dialogue or narration referring to massive spectacle without actually showcasing it. Not so here. Gaiman shows just enough to capture the reader's attention while keeping the focus firmly on Morpheus' strange journey and family squabbles.
