Last week, The Strain kicked off its second season with a decent, if not spectacular premiere. The show was clearly still trying to find its footing and move past some of Season 1's storytelling missteps. "By Any Means" was a significant step in the right direction, coasting on the renewed momentum of Professor Setrakian's character arc while also injecting new tension and drama into Eph's crusade.
Like I mentioned last week, this season is already finding payoff in terms of shifting Setrakian away from the cranky, disapproving elder figure he was in Season 1 and emphasizing his old age and his uncertainty over his role in the worsening human/vampire war. Can a lifelong vampire scholar/hunter like himself justify getting into bed with the Ancients if it means dealing with a mutual foe? This episode was great about exploring the toll those problems are taking on the weary professor.
