A man robbed an oratory near Milan but later confessed to his crimes, telling officers that he had been inspired by the lead character in Netflix's Lupin.

As reported by The Guardian, the 21-year-old copycat criminal coordinated his robbery with the ringing of the church bells at an oratory in Monza on Saturday night as he attempted to drown out the sound of the shattered glass when he broke into the building's bar. He came away with €21 ($24/£18), a bottle of fizzy orange, and a significant set of injuries.

Despite donning a leather jacket similar to the one that Omar Sy's Assane Diop occasionally wears in the French thriller, the man was unprotected at the attempted heist. The wounds sustained by the thief during the burglary became a greater cause of concern after he left the scene of the crime, as he reportedly called for help once he arrived back home.

According to reports in the Italian press, the man broke down in tears and confessed to his crimes when he was confronted by the police. He cited Lupin as a source of inspiration for his wrongdoings, telling officers that he had studied the "slick and confident techniques" of the show's central protagonist before attempting the robbery, but it didn't work out as planned.

Monza's wannabe Lupin proved to be no match for Sy's suave master criminal. The Netflix series is based on the fantastical stories about "gentleman thief" Arsène Lupin, the early 20th-century literary character created by Maurice Leblanc. In the show, Diop functions as both a deconstruction of the gentleman swindler as well as a loving homage to the character.
