This Japanese Game Has You Raise a Creepy Goddess on a Train

Megami Meguri has a cute atmosphere. All the women characters I saw were cheerful or transformed into small creatures, and were accompanied by bright effects when they were extra emotive. But for all of its effort, there’s a slight creepiness to the 3DS game that I couldn’t shake.

In Megami Meguri, Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun, shows up and tells you to raise your transit pass’ spirit into a goddess by teaching the artifact spirit words of your choice and putting her through weird tests to check her progress. Together you’ll travel around Japan using a board and die system, and she’ll have the opportunity to learn new things.

When you meet the spirit, Tsukumo, she can’t talk, so instead she does a lot of staring, cooing, and some babbling. Her slight movements and wide eyes actually end up being a bit creepy since she rarely blinks.
