It’s obvious that Thor passes the torch to Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder. Right? Well, not exactly.

During an interview with Total Film, director Taika Waititi said that he doesn’t think Thor will be stepping down from his role as the God of Thunder.

“It’s really fun, the idea that Thor got Stormbreaker, that big axe, and now his hammer’s back and it’s in the hands of someone else," he said "It’s no longer his hammer. It’s the idea that someone’s taking his place. I think a lot of fans are gonna potentially assume, ‘Oh, OK, this is the passing on of the torch’... I’m not privy to any plans Marvel has for the future, but I don’t think that’s the case.”

Of course, it’s easy to see why we might think that. Marvel fans have been excited about Thor 3’s new direction after Jane Foster was seen suited up in a very Thor-like costume, and even harnessing the power of lightning in the recent trailer.

Although Jane Foster does become the new Thor at one point in the comic books, we have no idea how closely Marvel will follow that particular storyline. And neither does Waititi.

“We stick pretty closely to Jane’s storyline, and what happened to Jane... because that was such an influence on the film,” he revealed. “We’re trying to take the best parts of that.”

It certainly sounds like a pretty epic Thor sequel, with Christian Bale joining as Gorr the God Butcher.

Here’s the official synopsis: “The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods.”

“To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.”

Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, and Russel Crowe. Taika Waititi directed the film based on a script he co-wrote with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
