Tips For Setting Up a DNA200 Mod (FAQ)

I decided to make up a thread dealing with questions I get on setting up a DNA200. I hope others will add anything they think is relevant.

1. How to add new TC wire to the material tab:
To add a new TC wire you can download the TFR table from Steam Engine as a CSV file to your PC located here. Click on the drop-down box and select the wire material you are interested in. Then click on the DNA200 tab above the drop-down box and finally click the download TFR table as CSV tab below and to the right (pay attention to where you are saving it to on your PC).

Then go to your material tab and click on the + button to add a new material. Then you would click on the un-named material you just added, then click the next button to the right of the + tab which is the open material button. Then navigate to where it (the CSV file) was saved on your PC and click on the CSV file and open. That's the way to add a curve instead of a single TCR number. Hope that wasn't confusing. That's the way I do it. It names it for you from the CSV file.

2. How to add custom screens:
Download the ones you like to your PC (make note of where you have saved them to). Hook up your DNA200 mod to Escribe and select the theme tab. Find the screen slot you want to change and click on load. Navigate to where you saved the screen on your PC and click on it then click on open. Finally click on Upload Settings to Device tab at the top of Escribe. Now you will be able to change any screens you want. That is also how you add custom screens to your 8 profiles only it's done in the General Tab.

PS Here's a link to where you can download a ton of custom screens and themes. It's on Google drive and sometime I get a 500 error, just refresh and it will eventually load.

3. Do I need to run The Battery Analyzer.
While I always think it's the best way to go if you have the time and correct resistor, it's not absolutely necessary. You can go to the mod tab and click on the Watt Hour Calculator. Then fill in the mah rating of your Lipo pack and it will calculate the Watt Hours and ask if you want to use this value, click Yes.

PS You want Lithium Polymer selected for Lipo packs or 18650's. Three cells unless you are running a 2 x 18650 DNA200 mod

4. Why can't see my charging screens while charging?
Most DNA200 mods come with the charging brightness set to 0. To change this go to the Screen tab in Escribe (with your mod hooked up) and increase the brightness from 0. I use 50-60% (I have old eyes :D). Set it to whatever you prefer. This is where you can also change the screens you see while in running and charging mode. There are a lot to choose from :)
.

IMPORTANT: DON'T FORGET TO CLICK ON THE "UPLOAD SETTINGS TO DEVICE TAB" AT THE TOP OF ESCRIBE WHEN YOU ARE DONE MAKING CHANGES IN ORDER TO SAVE YOUR CHANGES TO YOU MOD.

Here's a link to the thread that discusses the new test firmware Evolv released, including a link to download it.

I'll add to this post as new things come to mind

Cheers,
Steve

great thread!
just to add, downloading the .csv file from steamengine tends to work best when not using the Microsoft browser.

Can I ask you a favor, Steve? Since I'm reading this only on my iPad but will have to run the program on my pc which I don't have this app, please write the full name of the "link", both of them, so I can type into the address bar.
Thanks again.

The best way to answer that is giving you a link to a thread on Evolv's DNA200 Early Adopters Forum that talks about this.

It depends on what you usually run at. EX; Say you want to run the test at .5 ohms and 40 watts. You would want a .5 ohm resistor capable of handling at least 40 watts. Check out the link for a more in-depth answer and other ways some people have run the test.

You can run it on a Mac but you have to have a program that allows you to run Windows based programs on it. As of right now there isn't a Mac comparable version of Escribe. They are supposedly working on one though. Here's a link to a thread that walks you through running Escribe on a Mac if you are interested.

That's too bad, I guess I'll just keep on using on my PC then. And hopefully they"ll come up with the Mac version soon coz I know lots of us out here are using Mac, not PC.

Having the ability or requirement to use external software isn't necessarily a good thing. There may be some added features but there's also added risk and complexity. Here's something to consider.

Since the release of the DNA 200, Escribe has used SHA-1 which in the IT industry has well known security vulnerabilities and was depreciated by Microsoft in 2013 and was no longer a Microsoft best practice at that time.

It's not listed in the change log, but the developer has posted they have recently updated the test versions to SHA-2 which will mitigate the weaknesses of SHA-1. But this didn't come until after Jan 2016 when the consumers started seeing Invalid or Corrupt signature warnings with the test versions due to the depreciation deadline. More of a reactive response than a proactive one. While it's unlikely anyone would be compromised due to the use of SHA-1 in the application regardless of how it's incorporated, the main point I'm making is it indicates a weakness in following Microsoft best practices to me.

http://evolvapor.forumchitchat.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1291006900&postcount=482&forum=454151

I know some people download and run random apps on their systems routinely without pause as to what those apps may contain or if there's any malicious code or security vulnerabilities etc... But It makes me question If well known Microsoft best practices were not adhered to from security advisories of years back what other lesser known advisories, best practices or vulnerabilities may also have been overlooked. I'm not comfortable with software making connections to the internet and sending / receiving data in the background when I know Microsoft best practices weren't adhered to.

I've copied a few notes here from the Microsoft Security Advisory for SHA-1 Depreciation for convenience but if you want to read the full advisory here's the link. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/2880823.aspx

Deprecation of SHA-1 Hashing Algorithm for Microsoft Root Certificate Program
Published: November 12, 2013

Version: 1.0

General Information
Executive Summary
Microsoft is announcing a policy change to the Microsoft Root Certificate Program. The new policy will no longer allow root certificate authorities to issue X.509 certificates using the SHA-1 hashing algorithm for the purposes of SSL and code signing after January 1, 2016. Using the SHA-1 hashing algorithm in digital certificates could allow an attacker to spoof content, perform phishing attacks, or perform man-in-the-middle attacks.

Recommendation: Microsoft recommends that certificate authorities no longer sign newly generated certificates using the SHA-1 hashing algorithm and begin migrating to SHA-2. Microsoft also recommends that customers replace their SHA-1 certificates with SHA-2 certificates at the earliest opportunity. Please see the Suggested Actions section of this advisory for more information.

Is this a security vulnerability that requires Microsoft to issue a security update?
No. A signing mechanism alternative to SHA-1 has been available for some time, and the use of SHA-1 as a hashing algorithm for signing purposes has been discouraged and is no longer a best practice. Microsoft will however evaluate any opportunities to strengthen technologies to detect fraudulent certificates. Although this is not a vulnerability in a Microsoft product, Microsoft is issuing this advisory to help clarify the actual risk involved to customers.

Since they are using SHA-2 now and have been since the first of the year I don't see how this is relevant (to using Escribe on a Mac) other than you never like to miss a chance to try and rip the DNA200. At least you're consistent.

The test versions may now be utilizing SHA-2, but the recommended version is 1.0.35.2 from Oct last year.

The relevance is that best practices were overlooked for a very long time and software presents additional risks regardless of the platform whether it be Mac, Windows or Linux etc... especially when best practices or industry standards are ignored.

And I'm not ripping on anything, I posted information that some may not be aware of or apparently understand. If you'd like to discuss the accuracy of my post I'd be happy to, but if you just want to throw shit at the wall to see what sticks move along. You always attempt to insult me or attack me, why don't you try attacking my post and teach me where I'm wrong or mistaken.

I was talking about your post. They always have something negative to say about the DNA200. It gets tiring after awhile. I get you don't like the chip/company. Here's a suggestion, why don't you move on to something you do like!

Edit If you actually ever used Escribe you would know you are prompted to download and install version 1.0.42. That's why I said your post wasn't relevant (along with the fact you quoted a post on whether Escribe could be run on a Mac. What you posted had absolutely nothing to do with the quoted post). On top of all that this thread is supposed to be about Tips for setting up a DNA200. I don't see how your posts have anything to do with the thread topic.

I have a name and password here, different name and password on facebook, different name and password on twitter, different name and password on several rc forums, different name and password on my financial web sites. Vlad1's post talks about internet security and the use of different names and passwords is common and advised for security reasons. One should not use the same name and password on everything.I use my proper name on some forums also. Is that against the law or something. I don't like Vlad's posts so he goes childish on me. I have been here a short time and if that is a normal greeting I ain't staying.

It's funny, one minute you accuse me of attacking you and not your posts. Then the next minute you attack someone. Nothing like having a double standard. From now on when I see you post in a DNA200 thread I'm just putting up:

Troll Alert....Troll Alert!

On top of all that this thread is supposed to be about Tips for setting up a DNA200. I don't see how your posts have anything to do with the thread topic.

Your failing to see the point I'll bold it for you and maybe you'll understand. "SHA-1 was depreciated in Nov 2013 by Microsoft and was no longer a best practice" "The software was not in compliance with Microsoft best practices with SHA-2 until the Test versions around the end of Feb 2016 according to the developer."

So after a little over half a year with SHA-1 they say they updated that aspect in the test versions. But If we're to assume that's the only best practice that was overlooked that would be like turning a blinds eye and hoping for the best IMO. If best practices are being overlooked it doesn't matter what platform they're overlooked on which has everything to do with his question on software in general and running under Mac or any other platform for that matter, there are additional risks when software components are required. You also replied to the question so don't attempt to tell me I should't post due to being off topic...

And I don't recall your appointment of being in charge of who may post or respond to questions or what information is important to all others. If you consider something negative that's up to you to decide and handle. My posts are objective to the best of my ability so if they're negative in your opinion you can choose to show me where I'm mistaken or wrong, you can agree with what I posted, you can ignore me all together or you can throw shit at the wall and insults that benefits nothing other than your self esteem or you can attempt to redirect the topic of conversation which I'll not participate in any longer here. Having objective information discussed openly, accurately and honestly whether negative or positive will benefit all readers and consumers alike.

so getting back on track........

I went to do a new profile this morning for a dual fused Stainless Steel Clapton build and another new version of escribe was waiting in the wings.
say what you will about the board, its nice to have, for the first time a board with continued support for this long.
I still want a Kanthal A1 boost function though. - will preach that until the fat moo cows come home.

Yes, I was already using the 2-23 version of both Escribe (1.0.39 iirc) and Firmware. Escribe prompted me to download and install the newest Escribe version (1.0.42), but it didn't change my firmware from the 2-23 version to 2-29. Seems like it was just an Escribe update. Rereading what I just wrote, I hope that makes sense ;)

Cheers,
Steve

it does not
I was afraid of that. Lets try again:

It updated Escribe (the program on my PC) to the latest version (1.0.42). It however didn't prompt me to update the firmware on my mods to the newest test firmware (2-29-2016). I'm actually alright with that because the 2-29 firmware's only difference compared to the 2-23 was:
(1) adds contributed translation for German. Thanks German DNA Crew!
(2) fixes .ecig file compatibility and locale issues some European users may have experienced. Restore Defaults should also be more reliable.

Since I'm in the USA I haven't switched to that firmware yet.

Cheers,
Steve

After I downloaded to the latest version, somehow my mod doesn't show the voltage anymore on the Kanthal.mmWhy is that? Is there any way to get the voltage back?

As you can see, the middle line is ---F instead of showing the voltage like my other DNA200 devices, like the Panzer

Hook your mod up to Escribe, click on the screen tab, and select what you want displayed in your 3 fields (screens) by clicking on the arrow in each screen to reveal all of your choices in the drop-down box. Voltage is still one of the choices. Don't forget to click on the Upload Settings to Device tab at the top of Escribe when you are done making your changes.

Cheers,
Steve

Edit Might as well set up what what is displayed while charging to. Make sure the charging brightness is set above 0 if you want to see what you selected while charging

So, what you guys are telling me...so to say.... is that I need to get a PC now that the Triade is sitting in the box on my night stand. I know I can run a virtual PC on my Mac but I'd rather not mess that one. I have a Win.10 tablet, maybe that would be the way to go. I'm too lazy (and tired from work) to go searching for the evolve tutorial so, will you kind folks tell me what I need to do?
1. Install Escribe on my tablet,
2. Check out tutorial on Evolve site,
3. Look for Steve's set-up files...
am I right so far?

Yes, but my Ecig file is for the VT133 (Dual 18650, wouldn't work for the Triade). I'll be happy to help you if needed. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have questions on setting it up. Lost Vape I think configures their mods, at least they did for the Duo. Here's the Escribe version you need (newest):

I have an El Cheapo brand tablet running Win. 10, Escribe installed just fine. Is there a mixed wires TC profile available? I'm used to the xXx mode on the G2, the easy-to-use mixed wire TC. In other words, mixed wire TC for dummies.

NO. You have to have a TC profile for each type of TC wire you are going to use. You probably already know this, but the DNA200 doesn't TC Kanthal.

TC wires are SS, Ti01, Ni200, Nife48/52. Did the Triade come with the profiles set up? The version of Escribe I linked you too should have SS316L, Ni200, and Ti01 in the material Tab already.

Quick question. I was messing with my Boxer DNA200. I changed the welcome screen and lost my Boxer logo screen. I forgot to save it. If I restore the default, will my Boxer splash screen come back?

I don't know for certain; but, I wouldn't think so.
You might be able to find the splash screen in the evolv forum,or some of the DNA repos.
