In one of the weaker recent Memorial Day weekends for Hollywood, Disney's science-fiction adventure Tomorrowland staved off a strong challenge from last weekend's champ Pitch Perfect 2 to open in first place at the North American box office.
Tomorrowland -- from director Brad Bird and producer Damon Lindelof and starring George Clooney -- grossed an estimated $32.2 million, far below industry estimates of between $40-50 million. Tomorrowland received a "B" Cinemascore from audiences and mixed-to-negative reviews from critics. It earned another roughly $27 million overseas, which indicates a tough road ahead for the film.
