Tropical Depression recipe trials from start to end notes

Oh hey I found a recipe mixed drink called Tropical Depression....

1 oz. Mango puree
1 oz. Strawberry puree
1/2 oz. Rum
1/2 oz. Triple sec
1/2 oz. Amaretto
1/2 oz. Coconut milk

I'm thinking equal amounts of orange and bergamot (& possibly brandy) for the triple sec.
From Hic's notes in his Grand Marnier Mousse

For ameretto HIC posted .75% of all of the following...
Almond. Marzipan. Vanilla Bourbon. Cararamel.

Tropical Depression trial #1
1% FA Mango
1% FA Strawberry
.5% FA Rum
.5% FA Coconut
.25% FA Orange
.25% FA Bergamot
.25% FA Almond
.25% FA Marzipan
.25% FA Vanilla Bourbon
.25% FA Caramel
Notes
It's pretty tasty. I mixed last night, on Vulcan dripper w .7 ohm coil 13-20 watts. It's pretty sweet in taste. I am not sure how to make it less sweet. Ok, I am going to see what one little change of upping vanilla bourbon to .5% will do. This is not bad, but it's a little too sweet to me. I'm on my tank of your peach cobbler without h biscuit and not sure what to do, but keep vaping this.
Sniffing notes:
I started drops at smallest %.
.25% of the first four almond, marzipan, vanilla, caramel...smelled Devine. I then added .25% of bergamot and orange...smelled even better. I then added .5% coconut....still divine. I then added .5% rum....and that gave the mix a funky smell.

Tropical Depression trial #2
Only increased vanilla bourbon to .5%

Not much difference, just a touch more vanilla.

Tropical Depression trial #3
1% FA Mango
1% FA Strawberry
.5% FA Rum
.5% FA Coconut
.5% FA Vanilla Bourbon
.5% FA Almond
.5% FA Marzipan
.5% FA Caramel
.5% FA Orange
.5% FA Bergamot

Still very sweet, but less mango taste, no strawberry taste. Like a sweet citrus caramel rum? Hmmm...

Tropical Depression trial #4
1.5% FA Mango (could b higher due to dripping, tasting, adding more to same base.)
1.5% FA Strawberry...same here
.5% of all the other same flavors.
Notes:
It's nice and tart now. That bergamot and extra mango help.

Tropical Depression trial #5
1.75% FA Mango
1.75% FA Strawberry
.5% FA Coconut
.5% FA Rum (However I used .25% Rum & .25% Brandy)
.5% FA Bergamot
.5% FA Orange
.5% FA Vanilla Bourbon
.5% FA Caramel
.5% FA Almond
.5% FA Marzipan
Notes:
After 18 hours with the increased strawberry & mango, with .25% Brandy and rum it's still good. I can taste the main flavors, where I didn't taste the strawberry at 1.5% barely. I still taste the triple sec flavor as well as Amaretto. So far this is the winner to me. I'm finding the rum sweeter than brandy.

Caddisfly tried this #5 trial with minor changes of upping the mango & Strawberry to 2% and substituted nut mix for almond and enjoyed it with .5% Rum.

I like trial 5 with the .25%Brandy &.25% Rum, personally. However, lately vaped have been too sweet to me....so I messed with this more to find a less sweet version....

Less Sweet version... trial #6
2% FA Mango
1.75% FA Strawberry
.75% FA Bergamot
.5% FA Orange
.5% FA Vanilla Bourbon
.5% FA Marzipan
.5% FA Almond
.25% FA Coconut
.25% FA Brandy
Notes:
I began with 1.75% of mango & strawberry, .5% of bergamot, orange, marzipan, almond, vanilla bourbon....leaving out the caramel, coconut, and liquor. I found the strawberry a bit sweet, normally I would lower the strawberry to 1.25%, but I added .25% Mango....better, but it needed coconut, so I put in .25%...pretty good there. I then added .25% FA Brandy....got sweet again, so I added .25% more bergamot....much better.

Anyone who wants to play or mix variations, please do and post findings.

Nice way of summing this up. I'm looking forward to mixing up the latest when the FA almond that some sweet little birdie sent me. It should be here Monday. I have to admit though I kind of like it with a little sweetness.

I do also, but for some reason I want something more tart and tangy...zippy & filled with zest...onto next quest before my package comes.

Very nice @Daintanee and @caddisfly! It was great to see the all the variations and read how the progression came about.

I'll be mixing up the less sweet version later this aft. :)

You two make quite the team, Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, I love mixing online with Caddisfly. He's really great! He makes me laugh. We'll start a thread next time so others can play along too.

Maybe adding some FA Bitter Wizard? I have an apple mix, that I thought was too sweet, and I added 0.3%. Now I have a sour apple, and I like it.

I actually have a triple sec flavoring, if you'd like to try it. Haven't used it myself, just sounded interesting and it was something I didn't have....lol!

Hey T, how are you? You are such a nut, woman. You need to try it first to see if you like it. Then if you don't like it u can send it. I may be interested in that citric acid we spoke of. I'm not sure why everything got sweet all of a sudden. We are so opposite. Ill send you all of my sweetener, I won't touch it.

Uh, well, I'd love too, but someone have to be both our keepers. You need anything? More caps cake batter, custard, SWEETNER? Caps butter?

Nope, but don't EVER throw out custard unless it's in my yard! LOL!!
I'm eat up with cake batter and I stopped using the butter after it left a greasy film in one of my droppers. And I've got about four different kinds of the dreaded "SWEETNER" - :p - I'm just oozin' with sweetness....HAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!
I'll hit you up with a tracking # on Monday, little friend....:)

Ok, so I started thinking about how I could adapt this to what I have. Honestly, I have everything but the orange flavors, but I was intrigued by the almond/tropical fruit combo and decided to go that route instead. I loved the idea of the flavors but want to keep everything fresh and bright so I ended up with:

2% Mango
2% Strawberry
2% Coconut
1% Rum
.5% Almond
.5% Vanilla Tahiti
.5% Custard
.5% Fresh Cream

It's far from your original recipe, but absolutely love it. 8-9% seems to be my sweet spot with FA, so I upped the percentages. Thanks so much for the idea. My favorite fruity juice to date. As soon as I talk myself into trying orange flavors again I'm planning on making this as is.

That's awesome! I think FA Custard goes great in there. That really looks pretty good. I always thought mango was so strong, but found it depends what you mix it with. I really like the mango a lot.

And if you don't care for orange I wouldn't invest in it. Fa orange is real sweet to me, I prefer mandarin. FW has a blood orange I liked and I tried to create with fa mandarin & grapefruit, but no...dint want to re create, but make a good sweet and tart type tangerines type blood orange.

Thanks for the recipe post. I love it when we can work or base off of others ideas & create new things or bounce ideas around. I'll be giving this a go. Thanks! FA I use anywhere from 1-10%. 1% FA croissant was plenty for me standalone. Then there are recipes like Hics Lemon Meringue Pie at 9-11% I believe, and perfect.

It's not that I don't like orange, I've just had some really bad experiences with some orange flavored vendor juices. It's actually what drove me to diy. I love fruit flavors and I think orange would compliment some of them really well. And luckily Mama J's sells those tiny bottles. They're perfect for trying new flavors.

You might also consider the Mandarin if you haven't already. It's more tart than the Orange and actually reminds me of Tangerine

ETA: I forgot to mention that this recipe is indeed very tasty! I haven't tried yours yet Raina but I plan to do so. :)

Thanks Burley. I figure the mist of us are here to learn. Raina. I see why you like this. It's darn good. It reminds me somewhat of a spiked tropical creamy custard. I think the coconut and almond might add to the custard and fresh cream. Idk, totally different. Tasting than mine, but just as good. Thank you so much.
