Twisted wire coil spring back?

I'm playing around with twisted wire and using 28ga round Kanthal wire. I have noticed even after putting a lighter to the wire (after it's twisted) to try to draw some of the springiness out of it that it wants to open up on the mandrel so it isn't snug and keeping the size that I am trying to make which throws my ohm's off when trying to hit close to a certain ohm.

This seems to be harder on the larger size mandrels than it is on the smaller one's I have noticed. On my 1/8" mandrel it's not even close to where it should stay so I will make a 3/32" mandrel in order to try to hit close to 1/8" finish coil I.D. When I make a coil on the 5/64" it springs back but very little so it remains fairly close to what I am shooting for on ohms.

When working with twisted wire how are you dealing with the coil spring back to a larger size then your mandrel?

I burn mine before twisting it and the spring has never been a problem with 28.

I use a table top cigar lighter to torch my wires first. Usually keeps that from happening.

Torch your wires before twisting them. You can even use a Bic lighter to do it. Just make sure the wire glows red.

Sounds like I'm not the only one that has dealt with this then. I wasn't to sure about burning it before twisting it, I knew it would make it softer but wasn't sure how well the wire would deal with being twisted using a drill after that. Thanks all for the replies I will burn it next time before I twist it and hopefully that will solve my problem.

I was a heavy cigar smoker, pipe smoker too. I sold my cabinet humidors and all the cigars I had left, kept two desktop humies and my pipes, and my super awesome lighter lol. I can't lie, i dont miss smoking cigs, but I do on occasion miss my cigars and my pipes, mainly for the nostalgic smells. But holy crap did I spend a lot on cigars when I was puffing them.

My all time favorites were the Hemingway by Arturo Fuente and Prensado by Alec Bradley, I usually went through a box a month of each of them alone lol.

Simple answer is, if you get it hot enough it won't spring back. There are different levels of "glowing hot". Make it glow harder and it will stay.

From my cigar smoking days, I have something of a lighter collection including some quad flame torch lighters. I still find that a small butane torch as a plumber might use does the trick getting the coils to a really bright glow much better. It will do the job while the coils are still tightly wrapped around what ever I used as a form, typically a drill bit.

I torch before and after twisting. Then while the coil is still on the drill bit I usually get the little lady to torch again while I hold tension to keep the coil tight. Might be a little bit of over kill, but it works.

I have been playing around with a few coils then just decided to stay with a simple twisted wire or micro coil. On the twisted wire I started torching before hand and that helped but in order to get the 1/8" I took a 3/16 wire and wrapped them around that and even when they did spring back they ended up really close to 1/8" to solve the issue of spring back for me. Thanks for your input on this.

After your done wrapping your coil, keep in on your drill bit, or screwdriver or whatever your wrapped it on with both legs down. Then clamp both legs in the jaws of vice grips or similar pliers and PULL LIKE HELL, youll feel the slack coming out and your coil will be damn near perfect, straighten your legs and go.

I ran into the same problem trying to wrap 2 and 3 strand twisted flat wire. That stuff will not cooperate without a torch. But just a little butane torch to get it glowing before I wrap, and it's easy to work with. Of course, I still have to heat it once in the rda to get it positioned properly and heating evenly, but it makes it so much easier.
