16 years since The Blair Witch Project, and the ‘found footage’ horror movie has been squeezed so dry audiences wouldn’t bat an eyelid if the next Paranormal Activity installment featured talking animals. It’s a wonderful surprise, then, to see director Levan “Leo” Gabriadze’s Unfriended drag the sub-genre off DV tapes and into the online space, imbuing it with shocking relevancy.
Unfriended takes place on a single computer monitor, owned by teenager Blaire (Shelley Hennig), who is chatting to her pals a year after their friend Laura committed suicide. Via Skype, Facebook Chat and iMessage, they indulge in inane teenage banter until a mysterious presence claiming to be Laura slowly infects their programs, their psyches and their relationships with each other.
