Probably the biggest downside is using the USB port to charge can wear it out, so the port can not then be used to upgrade the firmware. Another big issue is care and feeding of your batteries. If you pick a fixed battery mod, no problem; you're stuck with the USB port as most of them are not removable. But it you pick a mod with removable, cylindrical cells, then a good quality stand alone charger takes better care of your batteries IMHO. Batteries are expensive, and dangerous when mishandled, so taking care of them makes good sense to me; YMMV. I just think the electronics are better in a good charger, than the dime-sized charging board in any mod can be. FWIW, the Xtar line of chargers, which are very good gear, all use USB to charge; you have to order the wall wart or 12V plug-in separate. Nitecore, my preferred brand, has changable cords with either a 120V or 12V cap on the business end (and a 240V EU style plug, too). You can get both and leave one cord in the car and the other in the house, and just carry the charger back and forth. Battery chargers do not have to be huge, unless you want to charge more than one battery at a time. This is an Xtar MC1:
