From brand new vapers to the most advanced vape-enthusiasts, everyone has become familiar with freebase nicotine (found in your everyday e-juice). It definitely gets the job done but the higher the milligrams of the freebase nicotine, the more throat hit the end consumer is going to get. Too strong of a throat hit is something that no one enjoys.
What Are Nicotine Salts?
Salt-based nicotine is a creation that came out of Pax Labs when they created the Juul. The innovator of this new vaping method found a way to use nicotine salts as a means to make 50mg, or 5% nicotine e-juice. This high dosage of nicotine was truly unheard of back in the days when only freebase nicotine was available. Hitting a device with 50mg of freebase nicotine would put you on your back, while vaping on a device with 50mg of salt nicotine would leave you feeling nice and relaxed, much like how a cigarette would make you feel. Salted Nicotine hits your throat much smoother than freebase nicotine is capable of.
Why Such A High Nicotine Level?
This improvement to the nicotine throat hit is due to the difference between pH levels between freebase and salt base nicotine. Freebase nicotine has a high pH level which affects the overall alkalinity. This in effect will make the freebase e-liquid much harsher as you move up nicotine levels. However, Nicotine Salts uses benzoic acid to lower the alkalinity of the nicotine, essentially making a much smoother throat hit. This difference is why salt nicotine is available at much higher levels without the harshness that higher pH levels would cause.
