Can vaping help you lose weight? I've never smoked cigarettes before but recently I started vaping. I vape with 0.3% nicotine. I have hashimotos which is a form of hypothyroidism that causes my thyroid gland to be underactive. This makes me have a slow metabolism and makes it very difficult to low weight. That combined with constant sugar cravings has cause me to gain over 50 pound since being diagnosed with hashimotos 5 years ago. I was wondering if vaping with an extremely low level of nicotine can help me lose weight since it not only raises your metabolism but suppresses your appetite. At night I get sugar cravings and tend to eat ice cream or anything sweet I can find around the house. Could vaping help me lose weight or could it have an adverse effect since I have hypothyroidism?

NOTE: Since I've started to vape I've noticed I've gone down about 6 pounds on the scale but I don't know if that is from vaping or something else and if that is just temporary weight loss or if it will continue.

Hello Kstarr and welcome to VU
Personally l haven't found that vaping curbs my appetite like smoking did, regardless of the amount of nicotine.

Vaping has the exact opposite effect on me with some flavors I have gotten like Backwoods Blends Vanilla Cupcake I only smelled the bottle when I got it and had to stop for a pack of Hostess before I got back home to vape it. Then I did a late night run to the supermarket for a 12 pack!

Some have reported weight loss, while others just the opposite.

As far as adverse affects, you'd need to discuss with your Dr or do some research.

There was a cigar "pro" (owns a chain of cigar shops) on a radio show one day and he mentioned that the solution for a bad case of nicotine buzz (from inhaling too much cigar smoke too quickly) is to eat a packet of sugar.
He went on to explain the metabolic reason why, but Ive long since forgotten.
So, its possible that adding nicotine to your body 'might' make you crave sugar (if there is indeed some effect/reward connection there).

On the other hand, there is some thought that a craving for sugar could be rewarded with a sweet vapour flavour session instead of a plate of cookies etc. Ive been considering trying this.. I only vape tobacco flav (with 6mg nic) currently, and I really dont crave sugars (for me its carbs).. but maybe a sweet vape could do something ? I gotta start working harder to get rid of the spare person around my middle..

I lost about 30lbs since I started vaping, I like sweet candy flavors it keeps me away from the sweet candies, I have a slow metab it's something I've always battled with since I was young, I've finally got it to a point that I was doing great then summer came and I can't resist my beer and I've gained about 15lbs back and kind of gave up on my diet :/ ...

I lost my first 20 lbs on a diet, not no carbs but no slow carbs, basically nothing with flour, no pasta, no bread, no white potatoes, no rice and to every meal I added another veggie dish sometimes 2...

instead of bacon eggs and toast I'd have a 2 egg omelette with half a bag of frozen veggies fried and mixed in (green giant Italian mix is great in omelettes)...
Lunch, I'd keep it simple, granola bars and chocolate milk.
Dinner, instead of carbs add another veggie dish or 2 but keep at least one raw/no dip, broccoli/carrots/cauliflower/snow peas etc etc...

but here's the secret to hold your sanity together, one day a week eat whatever you want (no desserts though) but pasta and all that, after your body changes to no carbs carbs mess your system up a bit and throw your metabolism into chaos and it kind of cleans out your system if you know what I mean....

I don't think it has any bearing either way. You don't lose weight, nor do you gain weight. I was 5'10", 175 lbs when I started, and I'm 5'10 175 lbs today.

Vaping has made me gain a lot of weight the past few years. I blame the Sucralose, which from my understanding makes you gain weight. Seems like most premium juice contains it, and personally, I haven't found a better additive to sweeten juice in my DIY tribulations.

Flavorings. Certain flavorings can be used as sweeteners. Dessert vape? Use marshmallow or meringue. Fruity vape? Try pear. Or just plain old ethyl maltol (aka cotton candy) in very small doses. Some even use stevia.

Yeah, but nothing leaves that sugary, lip smacking coating on your lips like some good ol' sucralose.

Oh boy, FA Meringue does exactly that, to me. SWEET stuff. I just read a review of Flavorah Marshmallow, pretty much said exactly that, and that it was like vaping sugar, LOL. Maybe one of those would work out for you? Worth a shot. If nothing else, they're tasty in dessert mixes, too.

I've been using meringue in my fruit loops recipe, and it does exactly what your saying perfectly. I assume you mean tfa pear and marshmallow right? Dragonfruit does some magical things also. This thread just got high jacked by DIYers.

The only one of those I've tried is FA marshmallow. Your making want to buy the Capella marsh now! I really like their V1 custard, seems to make any mix amazing.

ive gained weight since i atarted vaping, mainly because smoking cigarettes restricted my appetite. i ate, but not like i do now.
funny part is when i smoked cigarettes i ate 99% junk food. mcdonalds, t bell, all that fast dining almosy exclusively. now i heat home meals, salads, low carb high protein meals... and i gained weight like a mofo. weird right?

I've lost 250 pounds since I started vaping. It gives me something to do besides eat. I was 485 pounds 18 months ago. I weighed 235 yesterday at my Dr visit.

So, yeah, for me, it helped a lot.
Sounds like vaping saved your like in more ways than one! Congrats my friend!

I think it varies by personalty. I find that vaping desert flavors will quiet my sweet tooth. Rather than run to the store or bakery for something vaping those flavors cures the urge for me. Not the case however for those around you. Most of my friends complain of hunger after spending time around me. The usual line is "Man that smells great! Now I'm hungry!":)

Me, I started Vaping a year ago and was at 286, just went into the Doctor this week and I'm at 236. I still need to drop another 30 and I think I can do it. The only thing I changed is I started Vaping and quit the Stinkies. I believe it's a combination of things. I feel much better, more energy and Vaping satisfies most of my sweet tooth. I still love Chocolate and haven't found a Chocolate Vape that doesn't taste like Tootsie Rolls. So I still get my Chocolate cravings.

Vaping doesn't take away my sweet tooth, and I definitely have a sweet tooth. I just have to not keep sweets in the house. Or snacks. Vaping didn't help me to lose weight. Smoking didn't either, though.

I have to vape a lot in order to not eat my dinner. But, I have cut down on sweets from vaping.

Also worth mentioning is I've seen a few posts on Reddit and what not of diabetics stating that Vaping doesn't affect their blood sugar.

I went from 200lbs to 240 when I stopped smoking and started vaping 7 years ago. Sad to say chain smoking 3 packs a day was one helluva way to stay ripped. Depending on how much you smoked will directly correlate to how much you gain when you quit

I read a compelling story of a young, very obese (of a legal age) teen who heard of vaping and could vape "food flavors". Amazingly, he lose 120lbs thanks to vaping at the time of the article. He said that vaping took away his cravings to eat. He vaped at 0 nic but truly enjoyed tasting the intense flavors. Vaping is not only healthy for ex-smokers, but it can help in other ways. It was quite a moving story.
