The Warcraft franchise is no stranger to the world of comics at this point. But what sets Bonds of Brotherhood apart from previous efforts is the fact that this original graphic novel is specifically a prequel to the new movie. Bonds of Brotherhood is set several decades before the film, exploring the bond between three of the core human characters and the events that shaped them as young men. In terms of lore, this graphic novel has a good deal to contribute, but its presentation leaves much to be desired.
As the movie chronicles the earliest encounters between the humanity and orcs in the Warcraft universe, don't expect any man vs. orc action in this prequel. Instead, the trolls serve as the antagonists in this tale. It's a bit disappointing that this book downplays one of the big selling points of the movie - the idea that there are no clear heroes and villains in this endless conflict - but at least writer Paul Cornell gives his troll villains a legitimate grievance as the war between these two races intensifies.
