Education organization Medical Realities announced that the first live virtual reality surgery stream, called VR in OR, is set for April 14.
“World class education will be available to anyone across the world as we stream in 360 degree high-definition from within a surgical theatre in this world first,” a representative for the London-based company said in a post for the event.
The procedure will be performed by Shafi Ahmed, according in the Guardian. The stream will show the removal of a tumor from the colon of a male cancer patient in his 70s. Although the patient’s name was not revealed, he was said to be excited by the prospect of participating in the first VR operation. The feed from the event is delayed by one minute in case anything should go wrong.
