Brian K. Vaughan sure took South Park's "Blame Canada!" anthem seriously. His latest debut, We Stand On Guard, pits the Great White North against its southern neighbor in a missile launching, mech fueled brawl for it all. Joined by equally acclaimed artist Steve Skroce, We Stand On Guard #1 is a sprawling read, offering a beautiful look at a war torn new world. It's a debut with vision to spare, but it's one that often sacrifices character for spectacle.

The first impressive thing about We Stand On Guard #1 is the sheer size of the issue. 40 pages allows for an awful lot of story, and Vaughan and Skroce do their best to milk the most out of each and every page. The book's opening is almost like a television serial in its construction, Vaughan offering an idyllic glimpse at what once was, before dropping bombs all over it. Such presentation allows us to see the light switch transition of lead Amber, as within a page flip she goes from giggling tyke to trauma hardened teen following the United States attack on her native land. It's an effective bit of setup, yet it's one the writer doesn't quite build off of once he gets to the book's central timeline.
