Well, that was a bust.

So I was testing out couple of custards I had aging at around their 2 week mark. And I was horridly surprised how CAP sweet strawberry really brought out the flavor of dawn dish soap that I had not rinsed out completely. Fuck me that was so bad. What shitty mistakes has anyone else made? Have you learned anything from it? Thanks!

Yes, I boil bottles in water only, no soap

Yeah I've had that happen to me to. What I do now is let it soak in soapy water for 1 day and rise the hell out of them. Then I soak in clean water for a day then rinse and repeat rinse another day.

I implemented this system since the incident and hasn't failed me yet.

i was thinking of using a pressure cooker a few weeks back as i don't have a baby bottle sterilizer, i would think it would work the same. thanks for the insight.

Glass would do well in a pressure cooker, not so sure about caps and such. I got the bottle sterilizer at a garage sale, so it was good for me...lol!

Awesome find!!! I love garage sales and goodwill~ing. I'm currently collecting Thurmal lunch bags to keep my freezer nic grouped in freezer out back. I'll give the pressure cooker a try on wash day and just soak and shake the cap and nipples like normal.

I brewed beer for years while using no other sanitizing solution than a little bleach water. Did try iodine a couple times, but looking back, it was overkill.

Pressure cooker's overkill too, but it wouldn't hurt. Only potential problem might be thermal shock/glass crackage.

The KISS approach I didn't think of the thermal shock. Maybe I should avoid it for now then the water and soap work aslong as I rinse better then that one time.

For what you're trying to do, soap really doesn't do much. It cuts grease/oil, which you won't have in bottles. Even if you did have oil, you'd have to use a bottle brush to work the soap around properly.

I think the "worst" juice I've had to clean out of bottles is menthol. The gaskets took quite a bit of soaking in bleach before that stink came out. And those plastic travel bottles... wow. The smell doesn't go away.

I use lemon juice or white vinegar for the stubborn odors. But if the smell is still there after that, I toss it.

It may have to sit for a day, shake it up periodically, but I've not run across much that it won't clean. I won't use straight bleach on any of my plastics. Working in restaurants for so many years, I've learned that it will dry out plastics and rubber, making them pit and crack.

Soaking and sanitizing is only 1 tablespoon bleach per gallon. Straight bleach has a pH of around 12.

I haven't had that mistake yet since I am so anal about cleaning. But my poor hands get very dry after cleaning my bottles. Wash, rinse, rinse, rinse...done.

Lotion! As much as I hate having greasy lotion hands it helps even if you just do it in the problem areas, I used to work in a butcher shop and my hands would be in such rough shape with all the washing and drying through out the day, and the department was a regulated 40 degrees in the work room. Man oh man I know. I've had to sleep with lotion hands inside some gloves to bring them back to life.
