What Precautions Do You Take When Vaping?

Hi All,

I thought it would be interesting to put together a thread and see what precautions folks take when vaping. For example, some will only use cotten wicks, feeling it is better/safer than silica. Others, will only vape VG and not PG for similar reasons. Some people only use regulated devices and will not use mechs.

So, what do you do and what are you unwilling to do?

If we can, let's try to keep this thread as serious as possible. It might be a good reference for folks down the line.

Thanks!

Always wrap the tip.....on a serious note, I try to use only cotton but other then that compared to smoking vaping is like eating organic. Instead of the 100's of chemicals in tobacco smoke my e liquid has around 5.

i always ohm check my builds and calculate the amps/wattage to make it isn't going to short and is safe for my batteries

i also like to use lower nic juice when i am vaping alot (like 3mg instead of 6mg)

Not sure if this really fits but I use only regulated mods. I know there's still always a chance of something going wrong and I always make sure to check my resistances using a separate ohm-reader but I feel much safer knowing that my mod has short circuit protection/monitored power output. Basically, I know that my mod will not fire in a way that could cause my battery to go nuclear. I use good batteries too, I'm glad I got that advice early on. Don't skimp on the batteries!

My precautions: Pretty much like I've read above.

I double check my builds, as simple as they are, before using a coil.

At the time, I'm only comfy with regulated mods or very simple devices. I get battery advice from people I trust and buy them from trusted vendors.

I'll vape with silica in a pinch, but I prefer to use rayon or cotton.

I did months of research before I jumped into DIY juice. That's something I wish people would actually do when working with nicotine. I asked a ton of questions, before and after purchasing supplies.

Doesn't mean I'm doing everything right, but I'm doing it the way I feel safest about it.

Good topic, imo! :)

good point about the nicotine in DIY.

My VG nic base is 36mg...something that isnt as dangerous as something higher, but still can produce the 3 and 6 that i vape and I could make a little higher if needed

The best precaution I take is using a temperature control mod. Beats any other health-related investment you can ever make.

Other than that, I use drip tip condoms to let others try my mod. And of course, I turns down the power and exhale very, very slowly when I stealth-vape :)

Which temperature control mod are you using? What differences have you noticed over mods without temp control? Thanks!

I use a DNA40 mod. The DNA40 chip isn't the only game in town anymore, so I just say "a temperature control mod" now. As for why it's better for your health, it's because mods that can't overheat the juice can't produce acrolein - while non temp control mods do at times, even if you can't always feel it. I know this for a fact, because I can feel the difference dramatically in my lungs (details here if you're interested).

Mind you, this really applies to drippers only: if you use a tank without pushing too much power into it (or even better, staying well below the limit), there's no reason for the tank to produce acrolein. But if you drip, a temp control chip is a must in my book. I wouldn't vape without one now - be it from Evolv or anybody else.

One thing I have not seen here is battery safety.

I have my charger set where I can see it at all times while I charge my batteries and I remove the batteries once they show a full charge.

I never leave it un-attended and I don't leave charging overnight.

I do better than that: I charge all my electronic junk inside a closed M2A1 50-cal. ammo box. That way, if anything catches on fire, it'll quickly be starved of oxygen. I just drilled a hole in the side of the box to let charging cables through. Other than that, the box is airtight.

I made sure I understood ohm's law as well as possible before venturing below 0.5ohms. I also only buy VTC4 batteries. Not because I'm going to vape at 0.14 ohms, but because I like to have headroom. The lowest I've ever vaped is 0.24ohms which doesn't even draw 20 amps. I just want to be sure that my mech won't blow up in my face.

Anyway, I don't like VV/VW/regulated mods all that much. I like how simple mech mods are. Anyway, I check my ohms about 4 times before actually vaping it. Once after installing the coils. Once after cleaning up the coils. Once after wicking. Once after juicing. After that I check the ohms after every rewicking.

Other than that I keep a close watch on my mod's temp. If it ever feels warm I'll pull the battery and feel it. 9/10s out of ten it's just the metal in the mod getting warm from contact with the metal of the atomizer (which is often down right hot in these circumstances). Both of my mods are solid copper tubes so they conduct heat as easily as they do electricity. The only time I've ever felt a hotish/very warm was an MJOX I bought on a whim when I was just starting with mech mods.

I double check all my builds. Once before I put it on mod and pulse, and after I put the top on the atty to make sure I didn't touch the coils. Also I use only organic cotton, and wash my hands before I handle it at all. As far as juice goes, well, I love me some diacetyl filled creamy goodness so not much as far as that goes lol

I need to work on "locking" my mod. Numerous times over the past week, I've been fiddling with coils sitting in my atty while on my mod. From gripping the mod, I would sometimes accidentally hit the fire button while touching my coils with my tweezers(conductive metal of some kind). Sparks have flown once or twice.
