In fact, it's the first installment in 18 years. The basic idea of the series is that reality isn't what the heroes have been led to believe it is. In actual reality, humanity has been overtaken by machines, who are keeping our bodies in pods and are making us think we're living in a computer construct called “the Matrix.” It's heavy.
If you want a refresher on the original trilogy (or to watch them for the first time), you can stream all of the films on HBO Max. HBO Max also has The Animatrix, a collection of nine animated short films from 2003 that take place in the world of The Matrix.
The Matrix Resurrections is rated R by the MPAA for “violence and some language.”
In 2021, all Warner Bros. movies arrived in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. They stayed available on HBO Max for 31 days before leaving the service for a period of time. The Matrix Resurrections is the last Warner Bros. release on 2021.
Warner Bros.’ 2022 slate of films will not arrive on HBO Max the same day as their theatrical release. Instead, all of the movies will be available exclusively in theaters for 45 days. After that period is over, they’ll be able to appear on HBO Max.
