Today is an exciting day at IGN. Our review for Metal Gear Solid 5 is on the site, and we gave it a 10, denoting it as a masterpiece. At the same time, we’ve also published a Review-in-Progress for another great game, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, though we haven’t attached a score to it just yet. This has led some people to wonder: why would we wait to score one game with an online component and not another? That’s a good question! Let me answer it for you.
It’s no secret that online elements are quickly going from being a marketing bullet-point to a forgone conclusion. Just about every modern big-budget game ships with online functionality of some kind. The question we have to answer is how big of an impact do those online elements have on the experience?
