Will Arnett will star in a new Netflix murder-mystery comedy show, Murderville, premiering on February 3. The big twist? It’s largely improvised.

Based on the hit BBC Three show Murder in Successville, Arnett stars as Senior Detective Terry Seattle, Homicide Division. In each episode, Detective Seattle will investigate a murder, aided by a celebrity guest… who hasn’t been given a script.

“For Terry, every day means a new murder case and a new celebrity guest star as his partner,” reads the official synopsis. “But here’s the catch: each episode's guest star isn’t being given the script. They have no idea what’s about to happen to them.”

The show’s six-episode run will feature Detective Seattle teaming up with Annie Murphy, Conan O’Brien, Ken Jeong, Kumail Nanjiani, Marshawn Lynch, and Sharon Stone. But can the celebs crack the case?

“Together, the guest star and Terry Seattle will have to improvise their way through the case... but it will be up to each celebrity guest alone to name the killer. Join them as they punch a one-way ticket to Murderville.”

The general premise is that Arnett is the lead detective, with each celebrity guest starring as his new homicide trainee. “We’re basically making Law & Order without a script,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. One of Detective Seattle’s first cases enlists Conan O’Brien to help solve a magic show murder case which brings to mind Arnett’s time as G.O.B. on Arrested Development – a case that involves a rival magician, a former assistant, and a mom’s association.

“I do think people liked the idea that they could come in, they didn’t have to learn any dialogue and they could be themselves and just go for a ride,” said Arnett. “And I have to give these people credit because it’s freakin’ scary as shit.”

Arnett will be joined by Haneefah Wood as Chief Rhonda Jenkins-Seattle, Lilan Bowden as medical examiner Amber Kang, and Philip Smithey as detective Darren “Daz” Phillips.

Murderville will debut on Netflix on February 3, 2022.
