WWE has signed a deal to make an official wrestling role-playing game, with an official reveal coming soon.

Revealed in WWE's latest earnings call (as reported by Eurogamer) chief brand manager Stephanie McMahon said gaming was a priority for the company (as 80% of its audience are gamers) and it would be expanding that division with the new RPG.

She only touched briefly on the game, simply saying WWE had "recently signed a new deal in the role-playing game space that will be announced soon", but spoke of it separately to the mainline WWE series, implying that the RPG will be something new entirely.

McMahon was speaking amid a wider discussion of the company's video games, so this will presumably be a video game RPG, rather than a tabletop RPG.

WWE 2K22, the latest in that mainline series, was released in March after a pretty disastrous launch of 2K20 prompted a year's break – and McMahon says this tactic proved very successful for the franchise.

"After taking a little more than a year off to improve the game engine, we worked hand in glove with our partners at Take-Two Interactive, listened to our customers and fans, and earned back their trust by delivering a game that exceeded their expectations," she said.

"WWE 2K22 was a commercial and critical success, with the highest Metacritic scores on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms in franchise history, with over 5.6m hours viewed on Twitch to date."

The rest of WWE's gaming division also appears to be doing well, with McMahon commenting that its mobile games (SuperCard and Champions) continue to have strong performances.

It's not the only wrestling franchise in gaming though, as AEW recently announced the title of its new game, AEW Fight Forever, alongside two new playable wrestlers.

In our 8/10 review of the latest WWE game, IGN said "2K22 is a tremendous leap forward compared to 2K20. The action is faster, more pick-up-and-play friendly, the roster of 160+ wrestlers has never looked better, and the addition of MyGM mode rounds out a well rounded offering of modes for just about every type of wrestling fan."
